Mac Pro Having issues on start-up and sleep

My Mac Pro is having significant issues on start up (will not boot-up) The harddrive and/or fan sounds like it is racing as soon as the power button is pressed. In order to get the computer to boot, I have to cycle the power up/off process 5-8 times.

I have also noticed in the last 24 hours that when the computer goes to sleep, it sounds like the hard drive and/or fan goes into overdive until it is woke from sleep mode.

I would be very grateful for any guidance.

Ok, I think I finally found the problem. I replaced the vidoe card on a tech friend suggetion as fan for the old was the culprit in the loud racing. After installing the new card, I had a very hard time starting up and when it did the screen would sometimes go blank and the video card fan would start racing. So I did what you suggested and discounted each peripheral and finally found that the one item that was causing the issues was the USB multi-hub that I had put in several weeks ago. The computer now resists any connection to this. Have any suggestions on a USB mulit-hub that does not cause the problems? I need some extra ports.

Many thanks!!
