Q: A better iPhone 4s battery life

Since I got my iPhone 4s I was very disappointed with the battery life: it looks like I'm not the only one..

During the last days I found  several solutions that really improved my battery life

You have to read for days to find the  good tips among hundred discussions, this is why I'm sharing those here

I'm still hoping  that Apple will do something soon to improve IOS5 battery eating disorder

1)  Fully charge the battery with the iPhone off

At night -or when you do not need it- plug in your iPhone to the charger , then switch it off

pulling the red tab  on the screen and let it charge.

Do not switch it off before and plug in after because

the iPhone will start back automatically

The battery will go to 100% and it will last  longer

This is a procedure I have done in the past even with  old iPhone and iPad and I always found that works great.

Same for laptop.

2)  Turn off  Setting Time Zone function

in Locations (system services). It never turns off location searching so it drains the battery.

This setting was draining my battery 3% in one hour with everything off.

3) Turn off  Diagnostic & Usage Data.

Settings > General > About > Diagnostic & Usage > Diagnostic & Usage Data.

Another big improvement

4) Brightness at the minimum you can stand

5) iCloud  off

I use it to sync when I'm at home and with wi-fi for now: hopefully Apple will come up with some fixes

I had to kill several operations to get a decent battery life: I do not think this is what you need to do when you buy an expensive phone

Everything should work fine and the battery last as long as promised...

6) No iCloud cellular use

Settings > iCloud > Documents & Data > Use Cellular = OFF

7)  Turn off Time Zone and Ask to join networks

8) Do not leave iMessage in standby when you do not use it

Quit as soon as you finish sending messages

Thanks to everyone who suggested all these tricks : it's difficult to go back and find them all but

my gratitude goes to all of you !

Go to SETTINGS ...LOCATION SERVICES ...all the way to the bottom of the page ...SYSTEM SERVICES ...SETTING TIME ZONE -> OFF   Problem Solved!! Whilst you're about it switch on Status Bar Icon so you can see when it's active.

Tried turning off all applications, shutting down locate, and turning time zone off.  Battery almost completely drained in less than 4 hours.  Then, found that there was a 2 day old outgoing message in my outbox for email.  Phone was continually trying to send.  Deleted message and phone is behaving much better with battery life.

I heard about this (turning time zone support off) in a number of places and did it, but no joy, battery life was still getting eaten up.

But that caused me to then think about the weather app/wdiget constantly checking my location whenever I opened notification centre.  I know from elsewhere that location checking can be a big drain on battery.

I have an iphone 4s and I have also discovered that in the email settings, selecting to 'fetch manually' has no affect on emails being pushed to your phone whenever they are received.

I tried this after randomly getting an email alert today, and wondering how it happened when i didnt refresh my emails, and I wasnt even using my phone at the time!

I checked that the main option for 'fetch manually' was selected, and sent myself an email from my computer.. within seconds my phone vibrated telling me I had an email.

Instead, you have to go into advanced menu and select fetch manually on each of your email accounts!

This is clearly draining the battery faster than usual and I recommend everyone checks their advanced options if you prefer to manually fetch your emails and increase your battery life.

This is my first experience having a smartphone and it's been pretty annoying. I have to carry a portable battery to make my phone life last throughout the day...and I thought this would increase my productivity!

I've tried everything in the posts and still doesn't fix the problem--I have done my due diligence and now I'm looking for the reported fix--when will it arrive.  Has anyone heard?

This helped a lot for me, when nothing else made much difference.  If you use Facebook, make sure that in Settings/Location Services that GPS is turned OFF for Facebook.  Even if Facebook isn't currently active, it's location awareness really seems to drain the battery.

Apple does not announce point releases in advance, and in this case they may not know themselves. They will need to complete testing and verify that it really does fix whatever the problem is or problems are; it isn't clear at all what is causing it, because so many different fixes have been identified by users.
