Q: A better iPhone 4s battery life

Since I got my iPhone 4s I was very disappointed with the battery life: it looks like I'm not the only one..

During the last days I found  several solutions that really improved my battery life

You have to read for days to find the  good tips among hundred discussions, this is why I'm sharing those here

I'm still hoping  that Apple will do something soon to improve IOS5 battery eating disorder

1)  Fully charge the battery with the iPhone off

At night -or when you do not need it- plug in your iPhone to the charger , then switch it off

pulling the red tab  on the screen and let it charge.

Do not switch it off before and plug in after because

the iPhone will start back automatically

The battery will go to 100% and it will last  longer

This is a procedure I have done in the past even with  old iPhone and iPad and I always found that works great.

Same for laptop.

2)  Turn off  Setting Time Zone function

in Locations (system services). It never turns off location searching so it drains the battery.

This setting was draining my battery 3% in one hour with everything off.

3) Turn off  Diagnostic & Usage Data.

Settings > General > About > Diagnostic & Usage > Diagnostic & Usage Data.

Another big improvement

4) Brightness at the minimum you can stand

5) iCloud  off

I use it to sync when I'm at home and with wi-fi for now: hopefully Apple will come up with some fixes

I had to kill several operations to get a decent battery life: I do not think this is what you need to do when you buy an expensive phone

Everything should work fine and the battery last as long as promised...

6) No iCloud cellular use

Settings > iCloud > Documents & Data > Use Cellular = OFF

7)  Turn off Time Zone and Ask to join networks

8) Do not leave iMessage in standby when you do not use it

Quit as soon as you finish sending messages

Thanks to everyone who suggested all these tricks : it's difficult to go back and find them all but

my gratitude goes to all of you !

    Apple wrote about iOS 5.0.1:

“The recent iOS software update addressed many of the battery issues that some customers experienced on their iOS 5 devices,” the company said in a statement. “We continue to investigate a few remaining issues.”

Another iOS update will presumably be made available soon to correct more bugs that have remained present in the latest iOS version.

I found some improvement but we are not there yet

The good thing they are aware of that and they are working on the issues

I just ordered the 4S for both my wife and I and now after reading about all of the battery issues (they really do seem endless) I am now researching this and I don't even have the 4s, I do have the 4 however and after the 5 update my battery performance did diminish noticibly. I think I'm going to cancel my order and see how this plays out for a few months. In the meantime I did come across this thread on an OSx forum page. Maybe it will have more ideas and help someone here..good luck to all who have made a substantial investment with a company you should expect to address this problem with some gumption...

I should also mention that the ideas were not in the article but in the discussion thread that follows it.

I did the update at 8:00am this morning.  It's noon and battery is down to 73 without much use (a few texts, a facebook post and a couple emails).  I have watched it go down 3 percent in about 10 minutes that I was sitting here...doesn't seem to be working.  I have owned all iPhones since the very first one and this is really bad.  I will keep it though and trust Apple will fix it.  And I refuse to shut off all the services I pay for.  That seems really dumb to me.  Never had to trouble shoot an iPhone before and I will not start now.  I buy them for the sake of not having to do that.  I was thrilled with iDisk and the way ios4 was set up.  Would've been happy to just to have had Siri added.  iCloud doesn't even have a public folder which I was using on iDisk for my Board of Directors to access my documents from.  The features have gotten worse, more complex, and more difficult since ios4.  What is this product I am using...Windows???  Droid???  Yeesh...I want Steve Jobs back...

I was very excited for iOS5.0.1 to solve this battery problem on my iPhone 4S.  I updated my phone, let it drain the battery out, charged it fully... and nothing. If anything it drains out even faster.

I've turned off all location services (which to me is actually one of the most useful services the iPhone provides) and the problem remains.

I've closed all running aps by double tapping the home button, and that doesn't fix it either.

Can't praise a phone too much when the battery lasts 6-8 hours with minimal use, mostly in stand-by.

As a first time iPhone user I am very disappointed in the battery life on my iPhone 4S. I thought the battery was bad on my old phone but it's nothing compared to this. Last week I charged my phone fully at 7pm and by 8am next morning it had shut down because it had no battery left. My friend with an iPhone 3 did hers at exactly the same time and hers went from 89% to 76% in the 13 hours. We both used them very little that night. Very disappointing for the 4S

Also when I plug my iPhone in through the aux port into my car I can't hear the person very well, nor does my music play very well. The music plays perfectly well on my iPod though. I've changed aux cables and even tried a different port in a different car and it's the same.

    guys,

have all you tried to "reset all settings" under settings -> general -> reset after the update and then condition the battery (i.e. fully discharge, then fully recharge) one time.  i installed and or assited over 10 users now successfully and it worked in every case except one (but the user had not had a chance to do the recharge process, yet).  it dramaticially improves standby performance from 2-4% drain per hr or more to 0.5% or less an hr.  i am on my third day now and the improvement is dramatic. check out process details, settings, etc of my thread here:

    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3484755?start=0&tstart=0

this clears out old and possibly corrupt settings that were creating the issue and also forces a recalibration of the battery.  after nearly 3 days now, my personal iPhone 4S is now performing as well if not better than any previous iPhone (original, 3GS).

Since updating to 5.0.1 it looks like my battery life has improved a bit.

I am due for an upgrade to the 4S next Saturday.  I shall see how the life of that goes.

I do think that with the release of iCloud a lot more background functions were introduced. So I would expect a faster battery drain for users who make use of those functions.  Perhaps the battery drains faster than it ought but some people comment as if the phone should experience no drain whatsoever! Moreover, the stated battery specs are probably under optimum conditions that don't include many of the background functions which are optional.

Thanks for the tips. I just did all your suggestions and I'm hoping it will help the battery last longer. My 3G battery lasted longer than the 4S! I did the update yesterday but it only seemed to make the battery worse. I went to bed with a fully charged 100% battery and woke up to 90%! I kept my usage at a minimal to see how the battery would last and by the end of the day by battery was less than 20%! Very disappointed.

Siri doesn't work for me since the update either. Keeps telling me "I'm sorry I'm not able to do that at this time" or "Im having a problem with the ntwork, please try again later". Plus when I ask it to do something, like check the weather it actually calls some random person on my phone! I hardly use it anyway, just disappointed with Apple. I've been a big fan of Apple products, but this is a real disappointment. Apple please fix it!

I upgraded to 5.0.1 and with Wifi "off" and iCLlud "on",  I experience about a 1% per hour loss of battery power overnight.

So your standby time is 100 hours. That's pretty good with iCloud enabled.
