Q: A better iPhone 4s battery life

Since I got my iPhone 4s I was very disappointed with the battery life: it looks like I'm not the only one..

During the last days I found  several solutions that really improved my battery life

You have to read for days to find the  good tips among hundred discussions, this is why I'm sharing those here

I'm still hoping  that Apple will do something soon to improve IOS5 battery eating disorder

1)  Fully charge the battery with the iPhone off

At night -or when you do not need it- plug in your iPhone to the charger , then switch it off

pulling the red tab  on the screen and let it charge.

Do not switch it off before and plug in after because

the iPhone will start back automatically

The battery will go to 100% and it will last  longer

This is a procedure I have done in the past even with  old iPhone and iPad and I always found that works great.

Same for laptop.

2)  Turn off  Setting Time Zone function

in Locations (system services). It never turns off location searching so it drains the battery.

This setting was draining my battery 3% in one hour with everything off.

3) Turn off  Diagnostic & Usage Data.

Settings > General > About > Diagnostic & Usage > Diagnostic & Usage Data.

Another big improvement

4) Brightness at the minimum you can stand

5) iCloud  off

I use it to sync when I'm at home and with wi-fi for now: hopefully Apple will come up with some fixes

I had to kill several operations to get a decent battery life: I do not think this is what you need to do when you buy an expensive phone

Everything should work fine and the battery last as long as promised...

6) No iCloud cellular use

Settings > iCloud > Documents & Data > Use Cellular = OFF

7)  Turn off Time Zone and Ask to join networks

8) Do not leave iMessage in standby when you do not use it

Quit as soon as you finish sending messages

Thanks to everyone who suggested all these tricks : it's difficult to go back and find them all but

my gratitude goes to all of you !

Excuse me, but a few issues are fine with a new relapse, but this is ridiculous.  Syncing issues, battery issues, and we can't even leave most of the features on.  I'm disappointed in what seems to be lousy testing before the rollout.  There are always some bugs but this is ridiculous.

You can't have your cake and eat it to. iOS 5 users DEMANDED a fix RIGHT NOW, so Apple released a fix after 2 weeks of testing, rather than their usual 3 months. Are you surprised that the testing didn't find every problem? It obviously found some, because there are many reports that 5.0.1 fixed the problem.

Hmm, while I understand what you're saying, should we be complacent as to quality control?  Umm, I don't think so.  Sorry.  Its not that I don't think they're doing everything they can at this point, but I still think it was released too early.  IMHO.

It was probably released too early, but there was a lot of pressure.

It's also possible, even likely, that if they tested for a year they still wouldn't have found every possible cause of battery drain, because most cases of battery drain are specific to a single phone and are due to one of the 300,000 apps or an interaction between 2 or more of the 300,000 apps. The only way to resolve those issues would be to test every phone. Which Apple actually tries to do, having the phones send diagnostic data to Apple. But most users (especially those who have a battery drain problem) turn off that feature so Apple does not get useful test data from the phones that have the worst problem.

If you review the forum over the past 4 years you will see a consistent pattern of battery drain complaints with every release, and between releases. The complaints for iOS 5 are at about the same level they were for every previous release. This is not an iOS 5 or iOS 5.0.1 problem exclusively, and likely has nothing to do with iOS itself, but rather with the apps that run on it.

If you look for the posts from people who have resolved the problem you will see dozens of DIFFERENT solutions, meaning that there are dozens of causes. Heavy battery drain is a symptom, not the disease. If you call your doctor and say you have a fever she won't be able to tell you what is wrong with you from that symptom alone. It's the same for battery drain.

Thank you for your thoughtful reply.  Battery technology has not truly kept up with consumers wants or needs.  While I agree that there are probably various causes for battery drain, to me, it is irresponsible to put out technology that we can't really use, especially if there is a history of battery issues.  I guess it's a way to keep the help desk employed!  Perhaps this is their contribution to reducing the unemployment.  LOL.

.. actaully, I think I should have said, my battery drops by 1 percentage point every hour whiel on stand-by. (As opposed, to a 1% drop of the existing battery strength every hour.)

Im curious how many folks here that have problems got their new toy and just played with it having never let the battery completly die and then recharge without messing with it. Instant gratification might be the culprit here. I ordered two 16gb 4s from apple, recieved them and set them up, played with them until they shut off on their own, then charged them until the next moring. Neither phone is experiencing these battery issues. Maybe I got lucky, but my knowledge of rechargable batteries and life tells me that a deep cycle is always needed. Even when the mfg says that its not necessary.

Give it a try and report back if you haven't done this.

I actualy did that for the first couple of charges. I let the battery completely die down and recharged but it hasn't helped. I'm wondering if it's the 32G. I first had the 16G but realized that I didn't have a lot of GB left so I exchnaged it for the 32GB. The 16GB was fine but the 32GB drains the battery very fast and I did let the battery completely die for the first few charges.

I've got 2 32 gig iPhone 4s phones and was having issues until I turned off the setting for the time zones in settings/location/system settings and turn it off.as well as running my battery down to 5% and use an app called battery doctor and set the trickle charge to 60 or 90 mins.ive used this app on my last 3 generations of iPhones and it works well with preserving battery life and doing maintaince.

My opinion is that the % meter does not read correctly until you do at least one complete discharge/recharge.  Also that iCloud and time zone location and push mail drain the battery quicker than most other things.  I had the poor battery life problems after upgrading my brand new 4s to 5.0.1.

I now get 36 hours of standby and at least 4 1/2 hours of mixed phone/browser/email/directions/Siri use.  I did a complete discharge and overnight recharge, then reset and it improved a lot.  iCloud and  time zone location are off and mail synch is set to manual.

I talked to an Apple tech and it seems they do have some bad batteries out there.  That may explain some who don't see any improvement.

Hopefully the next update will help even more.

why pay so much to disable everything.  I think the battery came disabled.  In Steve's memory Apple should fire this whole battery/software group.

I have noticed a similar problem, my iphone 4 had great battery life on iOS4 now with iOS5 the battery life is awful. Even with the lowest settings possible it still is bad. Hope that Apple fixes this.
