Try updating your version to 6.0.4 - this corrects some of the lessons not downloading.
It didn't work for me though... I'm having the same problem. I put the application GarageBand in the trash, used CleanApp to erase all traces of GarageBand 6.0.4 on my computer (which includes any pertaining preferences files and previous versions), reinstalled from scratch 6.0.4, tried using a "Guest" account on my computer, and I am still getting this dreaded "not able to complete the download" signal.
I have 10 gig left on my HDD.
I am also getting very irritated. Next step for me is Genius Bar...
I think I'm up to 6.0.4... It says there are no further updates available. I feel marginally better knowing I'm not the only one with this ridiculous problem. If I had known this would happen, I would have let all the downloads complete when I first started them. I'm going to try upgrading my parent's computer so I can install GarageBand '11 on it, downloading ALL the lessons onto it, and then copy them to my computer.
Having the same issue here. I received my MacBook Air two days ago and was trying to download some lessons today - no luck with GarageBand '11 version 6.0.4. Also tried to download lessons on my work MacBook Pro with GarageBand '09 - nothing. Downloaded GarageBand '11 on the Pro while talking to the Apple Service Center - hoping it might work - still nadda. They gave it a good try and were very pleasant, but the Service center over the phone couldn't help me out.
Hello all. I'm also having the same problem and have been unsuccessfully trying to download the piano lessons for the last few days now.
My first attempt was OK and I set them all going to try and download what I could overnight (when my broadband usage doesn't really count). I managed to get all the basic lessons and 3 of the Pop lessons. I quit GarageBand but on restarting the next night, it's unable to either resume the downloads or even start again from the store and I get the dreaded message from the thread title.
I've read through the other similar threads about this issue and tried deleting the 'com.apple.garageband.plist' prefs file from the user/library/preferences folder. I've also tried logging in as a guest and/or changing the country location on numerous occasions and sadly nothing has changed. I've reset the PRAM, repaired the disk permissions and deleted the cache folders in mac's libraries too, but again no dice.
Deleting the prefs removes the error message but it comes backs when I try to initiate a download from the lesson store again. I'm on the verge of giving up now and just hope another voice may encourage Apple to look into the problem.
I'm running GarageBand 6.0.4 on a 3.4Ghz i7 iMac with Snow Leopard 10.6.8.
I have the same problem, I'm running 10.7.2 and iLife11 with Garage Band updated to 6.04. Cannot download any lessons. I have also tried all the solutions everyone has suggested.
- set guest account
- disk permissions reset
- deleted cache
- deleted iLife and reinstalled
- machine is all patched up
- Called support with no luck
This is my first experience calling support and I suprised how entry level the operator was. I explained everything I tried all they could do is read from the script and suggest things like checking my Internet connection.
This reminds me of running windows and needing to be fairly technical to trouble shoot poor software development.
Thanks for the info, bertrude. The Apple support person had me do some of those things and I tried the country thing also after looking for an answer here. In the end, we came to the conclusion it was not an issue with anything on the computer so I'm giving up. She suggested I try again during "non peak" hours. Perhaps one time I'll be pleasantly surprised when they actually download.
I've just tried to download the basic guitar lessons and am getting the same errors as others have reported. I've tried deleting the GarageBand plist and that didn't resolve anything.
I've added my Apple ID to GarageBand and that hasn't resolved the problem either.
I've checked the Console logs and there is nothing there to explain what the error is.
Given the number of people who are experiencing the same issue I think it's safe to assume the problem is not my specific setup.
Anyone suggest how we get Apple to resolve this? I purchased the latest GarageBand to help me learn to play the guitar.
I can only suggest everyone with this issue reports it back to Apple. Hopefully enough reports may spark them into more action.

I had the same problem months ago when I tried to download the guitar lessons after getting my new iMac but deleting the plist and downloading each lesson one at a time worked for me back then (or I think it did, my memory fails me), but doesn't seem to work now
I think I've found the source of the problem. I ran a tcpdump (captured the traffic from my mac to the apple servers) whiling making a request for the lessons. After sifting through the data I can see that when GarageBand makes a request for the packages it is given a redirect to another package location. When GarageBand then requests that package it gets a HTTP 404 error.
So that - at least for the packages I am trying to get - is the source of the problem. The lessons I am trying to get simply are not at the location GarageBand is being directed to.
If I can stomach it I'll give Apple Support a call tomorrow to make them aware. I will certainly go to the feedback page bertrude provided.
Here is what I wrote to Feedback @garageband:
Garageband '11 version 6.0.4 has several pending "learn to play" lesson downloads awaiting completion. When I try to resume these downloads I get the message "Garageband was not able to complete the download." It directs me to the apple help page, which is not at all helpful. This error comes up whether I manually attempt to resume the downloads, or if they resume automatically when Garageband restarts. At this point, I am unable to download any lessons at all (even, for example, piano lessons which are not currently pending). I have tried everything suggested in the support discussions - nothing worked.
I have tried:
-setting a guest account and downloading lessons from there
-disk permissions reset with Disk Utility and ONYX
-deleted iLife with CleanApp (and all pertaining files) and reinstalled
-machine is all patched up OS X Lion 10.7.2
Many threads on Discussions.apple.com and no solution for this.
