Q: Dual g5 2.7ghz leaks

I know apple will not post this, but apparently apple thinks it is ok for my Protools rig, a dual g5 2.7 to leak coolant, fry the machine, cause a safety hazard, and fry the cpu's due to radiator being drained completely dry. I know the machine is old, but for what I spent, and considering this is a DEFECT, it needs to be replaced or recalled. This could easily become a legal issue! Opinions?

You were extraordinarily fortunate.  A lot of those specific machines failed within months of being released.  Apple never acknowledged the issue, but quietly replaced a lot of those units.

I see that you don't get out much (running 10.4.4 and all), but this is a very, very old issue, one that has been beat to death on this and every other Mac site on the internet.

I'm NOT saying that it is OK for this stuff to happen, but if you didn't know that this might happen, then you apparently NEVER visit Mac forum and help sites, or, you mistakenly thought that it wouldn't "happen to you".

The news has been "out there" since 2005-2006.

I just can't believe that this is news to you......

Hey japamac, I do get out much. In the real world, where you dont work out of mommies basement, you have more than one system. This is one system, designed and configured to do one job, and that is Protools. There are more than 40 macs and pc's in the studio since we do ALL types of media. Some of us invest (kinda like when you save up your allowance) in new equipment and use it until it dies a proper death. The difference is...and I will explain this to you so you can understand...even though Grandma is old (g5) she should be allowed to die naturally. But since the hospital installed a bad heart valve and it leaked...that's the issue. Get it? The question is the pump gasket is faulty. Plain and simple.

Ps my personal machine is an early quad core MacBook pro 2.3 / 8 gb.

You can be mad and yell at everyone that you want.

Try and insult me and pretend to know to whom you are talking to.

    I don't care.

The fact of the matter is, the issues related to G5 LCS leakage are as old as the line, well documented, well discussed, and with many that brought the issue up with Apple service, reasonably and maturely, were well compensated.

Currently, Apple machines are several generations beyond that which recently died on you.

It was an old machine, had a fragile cooling system (most LCS are 3-5 year systems) but it also failed due to neglect and lack of maintenance.

Yell all that you want. In the end, it is the owners responsibility to care for their equipment, and in the case of a business, maintain backup systems.

Apparently, in your case, neither is so.

It clearly states on the cooling system sticker "do not remove - no user serviceable parts" in order to maintain this you would have to disassemble a bunch of non serviceable stuff. That's apples job. I'm not yelling at or insulting anyone. I am responding to your remarks which were uncalled for. I don't get out much? And how do you know this? I also don't care who you are considering your responses are childish and not helpful. It also goes both ways. You also don't know who I am. You don't know I have older g4 systems running multiple Internet radio stations that do their job as expected and have no issues with faulty parts.

    Dust removal?

    Occasional visual inspection?

    Temerature monitoring software?

Background research into your machines history?

I also don't care who you are considering your responses are childish

And the tone of your initial post isn't childish?

    Yours is not the first........

    I have older g4 systems

These all suck volumes of air, need internal dusting, and in the case of thermal tape or compound, are likely in dire need of refreshment.

Thermal tapes and compounds ot the era can be expected to have a useful life of about 5 years.

Dust buildup stresses components due to resulting cooling inefficiencies.

Both are a common cause of graphics card and CPU failures, and dust is a major killer of PSUs.

These are some of the reasons that machines fail.

Whether Apple says to do something, or not, I don't care.

I have machines as old as 14 years, and it only stands to reason that certain prevetative measures should be taken.

And I shouldn't do this but...

I believe your response to japamac was uncalled for.  He is one of the most knowledgeable and helpful members of this forum.  While I understand your frustration, he does have a point in the fact that this is very much old news.  Even if it wasn't, immature expression on a discussion forum doesn't help, and will likely alienate those that you are seeking advice from.

My research shows that the last 2.7GHz PowerMac rolled off the assembly line in October 2005.  That is 6 years old, and is a long time in computer terms.  While I agree that it should "never" happen, unfortunately, it is not unexpected for a cooling system that old.

You can try to call Apple and see if they will help.  I've heard rumors of people getting their G5s replaced due to the potential fire hazard.  If you are polite and express yourself well, citing safety as your main concern you might get lucky - or maybe not seeing how old the computer is.  Even if they only offer you a discount on a new Mac Pro, that's still better than where you are now (and I don't know if they will).

The folks here on the Apple Discussion forums are just regular people taking time out of their day to try to help others.  While we may not know all of the answers, most everyone here will at least try to address your concerns.  Please respect the time and effort of those trying to help and I'm sure you'll get farther.

    peace

Indeed Richard, japamac is one of the most underated, most helpful users here, despite his lack of Helpful or Solved.Correct Answer awards, he tells it like it is & is always 100% on with his replies.. even when it's not what theOriginal Poster wanted to hear... & I've never ever seen a single post from him that was meant to be demeaning in any way, even when insulted... a far better man than I!

If you think telling me I dont get out much is not insulting and IF you think that was a professional response then you are crazy. I have been working in a professional audio / video world for OVER 20 years. I have owned Mac's since my AVID system on a powermac 9600 and then Beige G3. I KNOW how these computers are built. I have also helped people with their computer issues. Hey, guess what, I might even know MORE than your beloved japmac....but guess what....that response was a response you give to someone you KNOW WELL not a perfect stranger you have never met. IF Toyota had a brake caliper seal fail in a 2005 Toyota truck and hundreds of people were crashing, THEY WOULD FIX IT. It's not the age of the truck but the DEFECT in the SEAL. How hard is this to understand? I will kill this discussion since some of you guys have no idea what goes into a ProTools Recording Studio (yeah we DONT have to upgrade our PRO towers every 18 months) and are basing your response off of your email / facebook macbook air.... Oh and like I said before, Grandma has an irregular heart beat due to a FAULTY PACEMAKER..maybe you should take your OWN advice and not replace the defective unit...just let her go...she also is old

Whist I think Apple should man up, & easily could afford to, it isn't going to happen in the majority of cases despite record profits.

There's many things I like about Apple, but lately more things I detest, personally I'm switching at the moment. In fact I've been admonished for my opinions/experiences for my stature as #9 worldwide hear!?

    https://discussions.apple.com/people?view=status&cid=2120

Hmmm, looks like #8 now... but that CAN'T be possile???

If you think telling me I dont get out much is not insulting...

With all due respect, could this be a case of tunnel visiion... which is quite understandable considering your expeartise/bent???

I have no idea who knows "more" here (however that would be measured...), but I do know that japamac (along with others) react with a great deal more professionalism and courtesy and try to help anybody who asks for it - even the rude folks.

You claim to be a "professional".  Is this how you deal with your clients/coworkers/bosses?  Just because this is an internet forum doesn't mean the rules of civil discourse go out the window.

You asked for opinions.  You got them.

You want legal action?  Call a lawyer.

You want a place to vent?  OK, we can understand that to a degree but there are limits, seeing as how none of us are Apple employees.  Get angry and verbally unkind on a help forum?  Hmmm.  Not so much.

And your analogies are very specious to say the least...people will die horribly if brakes fail; they will die if pacemakers fail.  They don't die when they can't check Facebook and Twitter.  (Or edit their videos).

    Peace and long life.
