Hello,
I got my iPhone 4S on release. Was working fine until today when I was sending/receiving text messages. All of a sudden the contacts in my inbox changed to numbers. For example, the name of the contact "Justin" changed to "xxx-xxx-xxxx."
I simply tried to add the number back to the name (which still exists in iCloud) but it wouldn't change the number back to the name.
Suggestions?

Dude same thing's happening to me but mine also shuts down randomly. Wish I just knew whether it was an iOS5 problem or a hardware issue.....
The same thing is happening to my phone. It randomly deleted all but 4 contacts last night.
I had the same problem and, with help from Apple, just solved it. I don't know that this works for everyone, but it completely solved the issiue for me. I went to Settings, General, International, Language. There I switched from English to another language (anything other than English) and pressed "Done." After a brief "pinwheel" the phone appeared in the new language. Next, I went through the same process and switched back to English. NOTE: if you have switched to a language you don't understand, make sure you rememeber where the options are as you go through the "Settings, General, International and Language" sequence because all of those options will appear in the new language! Switch back to English and press "done" again. For me, that worked.
After spending well over an hour on the phone with Verizon tech support with no success, the above fix worked for me. Thank you!
Glad it worked for you, too. I guess it is an Apple issue. Seems like an unlikely solution, but it sure does the job!
Same type of issue my contacts suddenly were being listed in the Netherlands. The above solution also worked for me.

After 2 hours of working on reseting my iphone 4s i googled about contact problems and this blog came up i did the fix and it worked. THANK YOU SO MUCH !!!!!!!

This did not work for me. I changed it to French and then back to English and my contacts are actually worse than before. Was I supposed to pick a specific language?

I'm gald it worked for you. I am surprised this fix is better known to Verizon and Apple. Generally, it works for everyone, but neither Verizon nor Apple seems to publish it on their support sites. An Apple support person suggested it to me last November!
