When I add a compilation cd to itunes which I then want to sync to my ipad, all the songs in that cd are shown as individual folders in the ipad music folder. I searched itunes for how to keep compilation cd's in o e folder and found info to say check a box from edit menu - preferences - general tab. However, I do not have this option in preferences. i have itunes 10.5. Can anyone help please.

See Grouping tracks into albums for full details, but I suspect all you need to do is put Various Artists into the Albums Artist field.
The preference you mention has been moved to View > Column Browser > Group Compilations but only affects what goes on in iTunes, not your devices. iOS devices group tracks on Album Artist and ignore the Part of a compilation flag.

Thank you for your reply. View > column browser > group compilations when I found it after your reply was already ticked for Group Compilations and Use Album Artists. But even in itunes the songs within the compilation cd were showing as individual songs. I have only had the ipad for just over 2 months so my experience with itunes is absolutely zilch! I was considering buying an ipod touch but if I cannot transfer my compilation cd's then I will have to think again.
How do I put Various Artists into the Albums Artist field? My help file for itunes has disappeared since upgrading to 10.5 so cannot use that, as I would normally look at help files before asking questions.
