Loud Popping Noise when wake from sleep

On my new iMac CD 20" there is a load popping noise that comes from the speakers when I wake it up from sleep. Also, the hard-drive or the super-drive clicks a few when waken from sleep. Yesterday there was a static noise coming from the speakers while I was using the machine on the web, it was load enough to be annoying, I restarted it and the sound went any. I am wondering if any others have noticed this problem and should I take it back for a new one.
My wife has even said that the sounds don't seem right.
Any feedback would be great!
Thanks.

I had a problem with the 1st iMac CD I purchased, it wasn't finding the IR receiver and the remote control was not working with it. I tried everything and I finally returned it to the Applestore and they gave me a new one just like that, very easy. The 1st one was silent, I could not hear a thing, the 2nd machine that I have now make these noises I have described above. This is making me think that something is wrong with just this one. Who knows??
I will have to investigate further if the sleep has anything to do with this as you talk about above.

I have external speakers that include a subwoofer (and small amp) that do not display this noise except when I unplug or plug in the mini jack (which is expected). Perhaps there is a connection problem - does the pop happen when it goes to sleep as well? On another note, do you have any applications that have audio outputs running when you put the machine to sleep? Just thinking out loud here.....

I have also done the same tests and come to the same conclusion; it is the external JBL speakers that I have connected to the computer.
I disconnected the speakers and put the machine to sleep for a few minutes and restarted a few times and there was no sound anymore coming from the speakers.
I still hear the hard drive or super drive spin up and spin down really loud immediately after waking from sleep.
One thing leads to the another...

The pop appears to be an analog audio circuit powering up. Apple has apparently muted the internal speakers so that the pop is not heard through them. However, headphones or external speakers will pop loudly. When mine wakes from sleep, I get a flash of a blue screen, as the screen goes dark again, I get the pop.

This is probably not broken hardware. Maybe it can be fixed with firmware, maybe not. One way to minimize it is to run the Mac's audio volume all the way up during normal use and set the external speaker's volume control for the desired volume. This minimized the audio gain downstream from the source of the pop.

I will have to retract my earlier post on this. If I turn up the volume on my external speakers and have the Mac volume near the highest level, I do get a pop. I would not call it really loud, but it is definitely there. My guess is that the power to the audio board is coming on in a surge of some sort and sending a rogue signal to the speakers.

It is not something that concerns me in any great deal, but it will be interesting to see if it can be worked out with software or if this is just a quirk of this new hardware.

I have the same problem when I wake my 20" (early 2006) iMac from sleep. It happens not only with my external speakers (Soundsticks II) but also with headphones attached to the audio output jack. As such, it appears to be an issue with the jack itself but could be OS related -- it never happened with my prior Mac (PowerMac G5 dual 2ghz). I am going to call Apple or bring my computer in to an Apple store as I don't believe this to be normal nor acceptable. I should have waited for the "Revision B" model that will most likely be out soon.

Btw, does anyone know how to make the internal speakers work along with external speakers?
