The "bong" sound is supposed to let you know the machine checks out, you can lower it's volume, but you shouldn't turn it off as if your getting beeps, then that means you have a issue.

1 beep = no RAM installed

2 beeps = incompatible RAM types

3 beeps = no good banks

4 beeps = no good boot images in the boot ROM (and/or bad sys config block)

5 beeps = processor is not usable

If your getting beeps, run a Hardware Test and scheduale a appointment with AppleCare

To turn down the bong sound you should look at the free StartupSound at MacUpdate.com

Won't be on the AppStore, Apple won't allow that for sure. 🙂
