I am trying to update my iphone 3

I am trying to update my iphone 3 and have followed all the steps outlined on the apple support page but I keep getting a message saying that my itunes version is updated and it won't let me click on the update software button.

You must be talking about the iPhone 3G. Your current iOS version is the highest you can go, as iOS 5 requires an iPhone 3GS or later.

iOS 5 is only for 3GS and above. If you have a 3G, your phone is not compatible.
