Q: Problem moving from iPhoto to Aperture3

Help!

 

Hi, I had all my photos (22,000) on iPhoto on my macbook pro and decided to move over to Aperture 3 and put everything on an external HD at the same time to free up space on my MBP.

 

What I think I seem to have done is copied all my iphoto's across to an my external Hard Drive..... which is where my iphoto library now resides.... but and all my subsequent photo's after the move have gone straight into my Aperture Library on my macbook. Therefore I cannot edit 95% of my photos without having the extrenal drive plugged in as it says images are offline, and the others I can as they are in the Aperture Library on my MBP.

 

What I would like to do is get my WHOLE Aperture LIbrary (i.e. the iPhoto library which is on my external HD and my Aperture LIbrary on my MBP into ONE Aperture LIbrary on an External HD........ any ideas chaps how to do it ???

    Hello Kevin,

    and we also need to know the version of Aperture you are running. Have you upgraded to the most recent version Aperture 3.2.1?

    Then you can check inside the Aperture package, which masters are included as managed masters by ctrl-clicking your Aperture Library and having a look at the folder named "Masters" inside the package. You will be able to see which masters are there.

     

    To get you started with consolidating:

     

    • Quit Aperture if it is open.
    • Connect you external drive and copy your Aperture Library to the external disk, since your internal disk is so small.
    • Activate Aperture by clicking on the icon of the copied Aperture Library on the external drive.
    • In the Aperture Inspector panel click the Library tab, click the "Photos" icon.
    • In the Browser window select all photos at once.
    • From the File-menu select "Consolidate masters"

     

    You will be prompted to specify if you want to move the masters or to copy them. I recommend to "copy" them, for that will keep your iPhoto Libraries working. BTW, do you have a working backup of those?

     

    If all goes well you now will have a working Aperture Library containing all your images.

     

     

    Bookmark this thread for later reference and reread our previous answers, just in case you ever want a more elaborate setup with your Aperture library on the internal drive, a working set of managed masters and most of the referenced masters external.

    Guardian Angel only comes with the upgraded support package, but i'll See what I can do.

    On further thought I think I will not sign up for the upgraded support package. Guardian angels always seem to be preoccupied with saving our soul, not with saving our neck, as you already have done, so we will be happy with any advice you volunteer.
