Contact groups can't be created on the iPhone. They have to be created in another app on your computer (i.e. Outook) and then synced to the phone. Goups already in Contacts in the phone get synced as is to other devices.
Alternatively, the Groups app by Guided Pathways (to whom I have no affiliation, apart from the fact that I enjoy their apps) will allow you to create Groups directly from our iPhone.
True, but that app and others like it create groups within that app only. The groups don't transfer to Contacts, or sync to the other devices/computers/clouds that Contacts does.
Ony way to get it onto phone is
Set up group in address book on mac,
pop iphone into computer,
Go to INFO ,
then to bottom of page to ADVANCED
click "replace info on this Iphone"
then sync then your good to go.
The easiest way is to go to http://www.icloud.com and create a contact group there. It should show up on your phone automatically.
Yes but why can't you access iCloud from the iPad or iPhone to do this? Its awfully inefficient that I can only add/ modify groups this from iCloud but its Seems crazy that I can only access iCloud from my computer
Hey I found this article in ehow.com

Follow the steps and its easy to make a group
I asked the same question. Answered here in this Apple Support Communities thread: Organize iPhone contacts into groups
This is not true, as snkhan said the app groups creates groups (on iphone) that can be accessed fromt the regular contacts menu as if they were created on the computer.
I agree with others that the inability to create groups on the stock phone is horribly ineficient, and an embarassment to apple's iPhone. They need to fix this ASAP along with the many other bugs. I am still in my first 30 days and considering returning my iPhone 5.
there are some apps, where you can add/delete groups directly on your iPhone (or iPad or iPod) and easily assign contacts to groups. For example "Contacts In : Import CSV & Manage Groups". See here: http://csvcontacts.wordpress.com/iphone-groups-broadcast/. As bonus you get all contact management things (deletion, creation) and ability to send broadcast SMS and e-mails and quickly clean up your contacts.
Swipe group to delete - only group itselt will be deleted, not the contacts! Then you can create new groups, assign contacts to group directly on iPhone, no need for PC connection. The groups which are created are "native" iPhone groups and you will see them in any other applications (e.g. in native iPhone address book).
We need to be able to create Contact groups on the iPhone. Even now at version iOS8.3 (2015) we dont have this feature . I was using this feature my my Palm phone way back in the 90's and Andriod always had this feature.... Come on Apple team , please offer it on your next version ... we still wait.
Replying to a thread two years after the latest response is usually a recipe for being ignored.
Use the Contacts app on your desktop. If that isn't good enough, try starting at -> http://www.apple.com/contact/.
iPhone-No Groups - Still unable to create “GROUPS” on iPhone phone contacts
Oh, Apple. This capability has existed since PalmPilot days since beginning of their time and on Andriods & Samsung and since beginning of their time.
How has something so basic has been excluded on iOS for so long? even on iOS8.3 (2015) without having to download Groups App from iTunes, adding yet another app on our iPhones which we don’t want to.
It boggles my mind that Apple is the leader in the gadget markets yet the most basic of features are still absent! I find most business users find it useful and important to have a categories or group area i.e.: business, personal, friends, family, etc so you can text email at once or look up a certain group. I KNOW there are some apps but it needs to be native. The phone part is definitely a place that Apple can pick up some tidbits from Palm or Google.
I find that the call log is as short as it is .On my old Palm phone I use to be able to have all my missed incoming outgoing calls for like years at a time and even on Android a large call log. I wish they Apple would tweak this as we need this added features please.
We would really appreciate we you could actually create groups on the iPhone. I am surprised this hasn't been addressed yet by the Apple team especially after all the improvements even now at iOS8.3 (June 2015) that reduced dependence on a Mac computer or on PC’s . Come on Appple team. We weill appreciate to see Groups on by the next version of iOS release.
Apple personnel do not frequent these forums.
You could always go back to using your Palm Pilot. Oh, wait...they don't make those anymore.....
Would appreciate if we can have this feature on the next iOS release please -Thank you Apple Team.
