Task scheduler?

The Unix cron is the internal task handler. Utilities such as CronTab or Cronix, etc. are usually just graphical frontends that make the configuration easier to do.

Launchd is now the preferred way to launch processes and can do so on a scheduled basis. There are many third-party utilities to consider, so I would say to do some searching at MacUpdate or CNET Downloads.

The application, Lingon, can be used to create launchd .plists. As for using launchd you'll have to visit developer.apple.com, register for free membership, then browse the technical documentation. Or you might try the application, Cronette 1.5.1.

What is it you want to schedule, what kind of schedule? OS X doesn't have a problem. You could use the built-in cron tool via Unix or launchd. It's not the fault of OS X if you don't want to learn how to use the tools that are there but you are unwilling to pay someone a cheap shareware fee for software that you could use.

You can try using an Automator workflow. I think this will work:

Get Specified URL - enter the desired URL

New Mail Message - configure to whom and email account to use

Pause - Set for 60 minutes

Loop - set to loop automatically and use original input

I wrote a small task scheduler for myself. It does not use crontab or launchd, thus always needs to be running in the background. But it can open files (like your shell script) or applications.
