How do I use Keynote with iCloud?

I just bought Keynote for iPad, in addition to Keynote 09 for OS X, which I bought a while ago. The OS X version is 5.1, which supposedly works with iCloud.

I had expected the presentation I started in the OS X version to magically show up in the iPad version. But no.

I enabled all the iCloud buttons and sliders and switches that I could find, both on OS X and the iPad.

I searched the Keynote online manual, but it does not even mention iCloud.

Does Keynote 09 even work with iCloud? How do I make this happen? Am I expecting too much?

I tried to get the presentation from my Mac to my iPad by using the "share" button in Keynote on Mac. This appears to upload it to iWork.com.

But in Keynote for iPad there doesn't seem to be a way to open a document from iWork.com, only iTunes, iDisk, and something called WebDAV.

I tried opening my iDisk, but then Keynote informs me that "Copying presentations from iDisk requires an Internet connection". The iPad is connected to the Internet just fine, but Keynote for iPad just won't access iDisk.

Should I use iCloud?

Should I use iDisk?

Should I use iWork.com?

Should I use iTunes?

Should I use WebDAV?

No luck with the first three. I will investigate the remaining two.

You can access icloud through safari at icloud.com. Click on the iWork icon and select Keynote, then in the top right corner, there is gear-like icon. Click on that and it will allow you to upload a keynote file into iCloud.

If you create the keynote from a iCloud enabled iPad, then the doc will be saved into iCloud without having to go through various steps.

Thanks Edward. Upload succeeded. However Keynote on iPad decided to reformat my slides, it said it could not work with 1280x720.

And once I make changes on iPad, how do I get them back on my Mac? I clicked on the "download" link, on the iCloud website, but I can't find the downloaded file on my Mac. It is not in the Downloads folder, and it is not in the location that I uploaded from.

Is this iCloud workflow documented somewhere? It is not in the Keynote manual. Is there an iCloud manual somewhere?

It should download into the Downloaded folder on your mac. If not, you can check where by clicking on the download button in the top right corner of the Safari window (square with an arrow pointing down inside a circle), locate the downloaded file and then do a 2-finger click (or right mouse click... depending on your device) and click on "Show in Finder"

Other questions you may be better off asking folks in the iWork for iOS forum.

I have yet to venture into any manual for iCloud.

To get documents—whether Keynote, Pages, or Number—updating between iOS devices and iCloud (www.iCloud.com), you need to enable both a system iCloud setting and the iCloud settings of each app.

How-to:

System setting: In iOS device's Settings > iCloud > Documents & Data > ON

In each App: go to iOS Settings > Keynote (or Pages, Numbers) > Use iCloud > ON.

Assuming adequate connectivity, documents should now be seen inside an app's file area, and online at www.icloud.com/#iwork.

Hope that helps.

I'm also confused

I have all devices set to use iCloud & the App settings to use iCloud

but no cigar ?

I have all latest versions of software & OSes

Im not sure why we need to access the file via a web site ?

i dont want to manage multiple versions on multiple devices

This is supposed to be a selling feature of iCloud....

I created a new blank presentation on my iPhone which has an up arrow on the icon

but this file doesn't appear on iPad or Mac Keynote ?

Another "me too". Either this doesn't work, or the way to use it is shockingly obtuse; I'm a reasonably smart guy, and I haven't figured it out yet two months after upgrading to iOS 5. I want to make a keynote presentation on Keynote on my Mac, and then view/edit/present it from my iPad. I have iCloud turned on everywhere, I've gone through the whole rigamarole, but I can't find any way to get the documents onto Keynote on the iPad. None! Safari doesn't do it because it won't let you log in to the full iCloud through the iPad browser; it takes you to a "set up iCloud on this device" page, but there's no "iWork" button like there is on a regular browser.

So, does anyone know what weird hoops you have to jump through for iCloud to serve the function of getting documents back and forth between Keynote Mac and Keynote iPad? That seems like an absolutely bone-simple, common use case, so it's kid of appalling that it's so difficult to do.

Update: Keynote on my iPad is automagically talking to iCloud, but Keynote on my Mac is automagically talking to iWork.com. And there's no obvious way to get them on the same page, as it were. What is up with that? I have checked System Preferences and also Keynote preferences and Keynote sharing menu but nothing seems relevant. ??????? This is really unnerving.

Same problem. My only "load from" options do not include iCloud at all. Keynote presentation made on my Mac says it was saved to iCloud but it won't auto download to any of my iOS devices. Trying to access iCloud.com from my iPad takes me to the "set up this device on iCloud" tutorial and goes no further. I've got all the switches on, but it just DOESN'T work!

Ditto here. I use my MacBook Pro to create a great Keynote with all the bells-and-whistles. I also use the same Mac, or my mac-mini, to present. And while I do not expect the same full-featured presentation to find it's way to my iphone or ipad, I do expect some kind of keynote presentation to travel there.

Methinks they are focusing mainly on numbers and pages docs, at this time, for iCloud.

Maybe, but this doesn't work for Pages either as far as I can tell.

In any case, as it turns out, if you read carefully, the promotional materials don't say that it automatically syncs to the Mac versions of the apps; they only claim that it syncs iOS devices, although clearly they are very sneaky about their weasel words, because everyone here thought it was supposed to work...

I got caught up in all this as well trying to get a keynote presentation from my Mac to sync to my iPad.

What I've figured out is this:

- keynote on Mac sycs to something called iWork Beta

- my iPad tries to get files from iCloud under the iWork tab

- these are two toally separate things!

- there seems to be no way to get these two services, both called "iWork" to talk to each other

- the only way to get files from keynote on Mac to iPad via iCloud etc is to open iCloud in your browser, manually upload and then it will work.

This is crazy!

Why does Apple have this function built into both apps but they sync to different places?!
