Hello. This problem just started today. I didn't update any software today either.

When I open Safari and attempt to use the menubar I get the endless beachball. I can force quit the application.

I tried repairing permissions, and deleting the plist & cache files. I also deleted the extensions in the extensions folder. I have restarted and downloaded a new copy of Safari but still no joy. The system wouldn't let me delete Safari before I installed a new one so I just installed the latest version again w/o deleting Safari first.

I cannot do anything from within Safari. I have had to go to the folder to delete the extensions.

I logged out of my user account and logged into my Guest account and Safari exhibits the same problem in the Guest account. So I am guessing the user account isn't corrupt.

I am out of ideas. Anyone have a suggestion?

I just tried rebooting in Safe mode and Safari works fine there. I don't know what that means though.

A Safe Mode boot empties system caches that may have done the job for you. Glad you were able to resolve this issue!

Does is work when you're back in your normal account?

Safe mode disables most startup items & non-essential extensions etc .

If you still have problems in your regular account, read this for more information, OK?

Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. The following procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed. Don’t be alarmed by the complexity of these instructions -- they’re easy to carry out and won’t change anything on your Mac.

These steps are to be taken while booted in “normal” mode, not in safe mode. If you’re now running in safe mode, reboot as usual before continuing.

Below are four lines of text in monospaced type, which are actually shell commands -- little programs. They’re harmless, but they must be used exactly as given in order to work. Some of the lines will probably wrap in your browser, but each one is really just a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then either copy or drag it. The headings “Step 1” and so on are not part of the commands.

    Step 1

Launch the Terminal application, copy or drag -- do not type -- the line below into the window, and press return:

    kextstat -kl | awk ' !/apple/ { print $6 $7 } '

Post the lines of output (if any) that appear below what you just entered (the text, please, not a screenshot.)

    Step 2

    Repeat with this line:

    sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk ' !/0x|apple|com\.vix|edu\.|org\./ { print $3 } '

This time, you'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. You don't need to post the warning.

    Step 3

    launchctl list | sed 1d | awk ' !/0x|apple|edu\.|org\./ { print $3 } '

    Step 4

    ls -1A {,/}Library/{Ad,Compon,Ex,Fram,In,La,Mail/Bu,P*P,Priv,Qu,Scripti,Sta}* 2> /dev/null

Important: If you synchronize with a MobileMe account, your me.com email address will appear in the output of the above command. Change it to something like “user@me.com” before posting.

Remember, this is all drag-and-drop or copy-and-paste, whichever you prefer -- no typing, except your password.

    You can then quit Terminal.

It works in Safe mode but when I go to Normal setup it is the same old problem.

If you follow Linc's advice above, you will have a list that we can work really well with.  It might seem scary, but it really tells us volumes.  You can do it.

    Hi Link,

Here is the outcome of the first command:

    com.AmbrosiaSW.AudioSupport(3.2)

    com.Cycling74.driver.Soundflower(1.5.2)

I copied the entire exchange if you need that just let me know.

Oddly enough I had opened Ambrosia's Wiretap a little while before this thing happened yesterday. And I see Terminal is showing something about Ambrosia in that first command output.

    Thank you.

Just in case here is the entire exchange:

    Wow, that's all, Linc?

    Hmmmmmmm.

  • Linc Davis Level 10 Level 10 (150,590 points)

There's obviously a lot more there, but I think SIMBL is most likely to be causing the problem the OP is complaining about. If he likes his computer the way it is otherwise, I'm not going to deprive him.

  • ~Bee Level 7 Level 7 (31,095 points)

  • jabberwock Level 2 Level 2 (380 points)

Thanks that was it. Works great now.

  • Linc Davis Level 10 Level 10 (150,590 points)

Make sure you never reinstall SIMBL, as it’s one of the worst pieces of crapware on the Mac platform. It’s likely to come bundled with some other modfication that depends on it. If you want trouble-free computing, avoid software that makes miraculous changes to other software, especially built-in applications. The only real exception to that rule is Safari extensions, which are mostly safe, and are easy to get rid of when they don’t work. SIMBL and its dependents are not Safari extensions.
