Q: I'm getting an insecure startup item

I'm getting an insecure startup item (BRESINKx86Monitoring) appearing at startup, I've tried restarting my PRAM and it still appears.

Here is the message:

“/Library/StartupItems/BRESINKx86Monitoring” has not been started because it does not have the proper security settings.

I'm not sure, but this problem may have followd me from my last system, there where a bunch of errors on that clunky old thing, but this MacPro is weeks old.

Any help would be appreciated.

Not sure how it got the wrong permissions (and a repair permissions in Disk Utility won't change that unless the permissions on the enclosing folder itself is wrong -- /Library/StartupItems).  You must have installed one of the Bresink utilities like Hardware Monitor or Temperature Monitor) which should have set the proper permissions (works on my machine).

Or just remove it.  It's where that message says it is (/Library/StartupItems/BRESINKx86Monitoring).  Of course the next time you run the Bresink utility it should reinstall the startupitem hopefully with the proper permissions.

Note, if it is a "carry over" from an older system, removing it is the proper choice.  If you cannot trash it using the finder, you can easily do it from the terminal.  Just cut/paste the following line into a terminal window:

    sudo rm -rf /Library/StartupItems/BRESINKx86Monitoring

Hit return.  Answer the prompt for your admin password (nothing will echo while you type the password) and hit return again.

Worked like a charm. I think it was Temp monitor carried onto my new system... All good now!
    Thanks for your help mate.
