I have an iPhone 3GS 16GB which was factory unlocked. About a 3 weeks ago, I updated from IOS 4.3.3 to IOS 5, and have lost my unlock!
How is this possible?

Because your phone was NOT officially unlocked. Most likely your phone was hacked to unlock it, & that's what happens to hacked iPhones.
Where, exactly, did you get this phone, & how, exactly was it unlocked?

The phone was on Orange UK, and I got it off a friend at work. The phone was a replacement, when he dropped his original one.
I had updated the IOS many times before, so it was not hacktivated!
Orange say there phones are not locked, so it's a bit of a mystery.

Then get Orange to unlock it, as they are the only one's that can authorize such.

I got my mate to phone Orange, and they said they want £20 to unlock a phone that was already unlocked!
That's why I came here, to find out if there was maybe an answer.

Sorry, there is no other answer. Only Orange can authorize the unlocking of your phone, no one else. If they want to charge again for doing so, well that's a matter you'll have to take up with them.
A locked iphone can ONLY be unlocked by the carrier to which it is locked. No one else at all. Sorry.

I am in a battle with Orange about this. Just thought there might be a reason, or someone else might of come across the same problem

I sympathise with your battle with Orange. I requested an unlocking of my iPhone 4 on October 6 - just before I got my 4S - and I'm still waiting! After a week, I rang them up and they told me the IMEI number had been wrongly input, said they would waive the £20 charge and then told me that their Ts & Cs say up to 30 days!
On the same day, I put in a request to have my wife's 3Gs unlocked from Vodafone, and it was done at no charge in 2 days.
I left Orange and joined my wife on Vodafone because of this fiasco.

Looks like my luck has changed :-) Just plugged iPhone into iTunes and it's unlocked -)
Still want my £20 back from Orange though!

Well, funnily enough, mine was also unlocked last night about midnight!
Result for us both :-)
I wonder if Orange sends Apple a big batch of IMEI's to unlock?
They must save them for months, then send them off. just a thought.
