I have a 3rd Generation ipod touch that I am trying to update to 5.0. When I click "check for update" it pops up and says "this version of the iPod software (4.2.1) is the current version". I have restored the iPod twice and it continues to do the same thing. I have four of these iPods and two updated without a glitch then the last two are giving me this trouble. Any ideas??

It sounds like you actually have a 2G iPod touch which can only be updated to iOS 4.2.1. See this article to help you verify what generation your iPod Touch is.

I just checked. They are Model PC086LL and A1288. So according to the article you sent it is a 2nd generation iPod but the strange thing is one of them updated to ver. 5.0 but the other two won't. What would cause that??

Yes I did and they are all the same model.

Model PC086LL is what it says under the About and A1288 is what it says on the outside/back of the case.
Is that the same model # listed on all of them? If so, those are all 8 GB models, meaning they are actually 2G iPod Touches. Are you positive you install iOS 5 on the other 2?
Something isn't adding up here. Either way, there is no way to install iOS 5 on a 2G iPod Touch. They can only go to iOS 4.2.1.

I Googled PC086LL and it says it is an 8 GB 2G iPod. A 2G can only go to 4.2.1. Apple only made 32 and 64 GB 3G iPods. You can also enter the SN here:
