bulk assign colors or flags?

is there a way to assign colors or flags to all the images in an Album?

For bulk flags I have advice to "select all "Meta Data > Flag" but if I right click I don't see a meta data option and if I click on the meta data tab i only have been able to assign flags to one image even though they are all selected.

Also I'd love to start assigning colors in bulk to images in Albums if this is possible. thanks

Hello Jon,

to flag the images: select all images in your album,

then go to the Aperture main menu (at the top of your screen), open the Metadata drop down menu, then select flag,

to assign color labels: select all the images you want to label at once, then ctrl-click, and you should see a pop up menu, in the second brick of this menu you can click a color

Jon,

the idea was to flag all images in all albums, so when you view your images in the projects to delete duplicates, then you will see which image is also contained in an album.

For this to work, you will have to select each album in the inspector, view the images in the Browser and select them all at once, then flag them or color them.

Then you will see the flags or colors when you see the same images in there home project.

Just try it with some images and I I am sure you will see how it works.

if i select /all/ the images (like 150) in a Project and I assign a Flag to them in the manner you describe, is there a reason that some of the images in the middle of the selection will not show up with Flags, assuming I see these on the other images?

No idea, all selected images should be flagged. Anybody?

That is different with the color label. if you should have set the "primary only" option, then only the first selected image will be color labelled.

The "primary only" flag is set in the "Edit" drop down menu, check, if it is set and disable it. There is also a small icon - a rectangle with a "1" inside - in the tool strip above the film strip. THis toggles "primary only".

Hi Leonie.

I am trying this and the software is fantastic. Also your help is fantastic.

But some things in here are very tricky because it is so powerful.

For instance, can i please ask you if copying a version from an album to another album - will create two versions of the same image in the destination album (if there are versions of the same master in both)? i mean, in Finder it will ask me if I want to overwrite the file or if I don't want to move or copy or whatever.

If I am trying to consolidate two albums so that there are not duplicates in the final album, can i copy the ones in the first to the second and delete the first? Or will there be two versions in the final if these exist?

I am trying to test this but it is tricky since the images look very similar and I can't really tell at the moment which reference the same masters.

Is duplicating in this case always happening, never happening, an option I can decide upon?

Hello Jon,

if you add an image to an album, and the album already contains the image, then the image will appear only once. The album may contain different versions of an image, but each version only once.

Thus you can add all images fom one album to another and there will be no duplicate versions.

And once again- if you delete an album, you will delete no images. This is safe to do.

Hi Leonie.

God this is fantastic software. Thank you for getting me moving with it. Not so easy for me on this end without the help.

This was a user error. I think I had part of the window off my screen when I made my selection in the folder.

Can I ask yo about the Primary Only Flag? I see this in the Edit Window. I think I want to be able to see the colors or flags on the Versions in my ALBUMS also on the Versions in the Projects. This way I can see where all the Versions in my Albums are coming from to organize better.

I leave this setting off/unchecked for this, yes? "Primary" basically means to only apply to the version you are tagging...?

Thank you, thank you, thank you...

What awesome software.

That's it, you've got it.

"Primary" basically means to only apply to the version you are tagging...?

Not fully, it means it applies to the first image of your selection or the stack pick, if you select a stick.

Don't worry about it for now, just make sure you keep this option turned off.

Hello Jon,

you are welcome.

I see that you are making good progress with your challenging project and I am glad that you are getting excellent advice by chacro.

I appreciate this little peace offering by you, but I have to tell you, that I am still disappointed by your last two posts to me, for I cannot forget easily that you labelled my last advice to you as "hating" and "rude". I don't think we should communicate further, while these two words are standing between us.

Good Luck for your project

Hi Leonie.

I am not sure what you are upset about.

I am reading the manual, I am testing in Aperture and I am asking questions on the Mac Forum on Aperture.

Why would you demand that I stop asking questions - and do the other two because you think I am not - and then tell me to "RTFM". Then tell me you don't want to talk to me because I said I thought this was rude and/or hating?

I'm being very direct and polite and straight-forward. I mean, I don't like being sworn at or ordered around. What could possibly be the problem?

Thought I'd tag this here rather than opening another thread. Previously I found selecting multiple images and then control-clicking and selecting the flag colour worked. For some reason now though it's stopped working?? Doing this now only changes the label colour on the last image in the selection?

Wondering if it's a glitch with Aperture or my install of it??.
