Two versions in two different Projects?

Is there an easy way for me to have the same Version in two different projects? Say I want a folder with the version-master but i also want to have some source material for another project that also can easily get to this image? I mean, I'd like the Project with the image and the Albums that I am working on to be in the same folder.

Do I have to re-import the image again in order to do this??

Thanks

Jon: Stop. Learn the parts of the program -- then ask questions. There is no way to help you until you understand the differences between Projects, Folders, and Albums (let alone Versions and Masters). This information has been supplied to you several times. You must learn it before I (at least) can help you proceed.

Your question, to me -- I know Aperture -- sounds like this, asked by a novice chef on the first day in the kitchen:

"I want to make soup with glasses, and serve it bread. The protein in my apron and on the knife are the same. Should I restock the 'fridge now?"

Kirby.

Can you just take a stab at answering the question instead of telling me how to cook?

It /works/ for me. This is how I learn.

I am fixing my database as we speak. I gave a technical presentation of my work in Austria. I build big things. It works for me.

I am just trying to make sure I understand the database and I /cannot/ do the one shoot one project deal because my data is not organized in that manner. Can you just take a stab at answering the question instead of making analogies?

Right now I want to delete a ton of Albums but I am not sure if deleting the Album will simply Remove the versions from the Album of if it will delete the Album and delete the Versions in my Projects. Totally separate question. But the fact that either of these may be obvious to you does not mean they are obvious to me and the fact that you like mission style organization may not work for everyone.

I'm just trying to get an answer to finish two weeks of working on this database and reading the documentation.

Got to move onto other things and I need to finish this for my next project...

Thanks!!

It's a very costly way to learn. I think you are taking advantage of my willingness to provide free advice here (I would be surprised if I didn't speak for many others as well). If it works for you -- and you can pay for or otherwise find the input you need -- go for it. But if you are going to repeatedly request my input, you are going to have to show that you have

- read what I wrote (I spend the time trying to make my posts informative and understandable), and

- understood, or at least attempted to understand in more than a trivial way, what I wrote.

There is very little in the hundreds if not thousands of words you have written that indicates that you have done both.

The readers and the answerers on this kind of forum have unwritten rules. At the top of the list is something like: I'll help you as long as you try to help yourself. You see you as helping yourself. I see you as ignoring my posts and advice. To me, you are not holding up your end of this unwritten bargain.

(As an aside, I learn from other people learning. You are not learning. I have no interest whatsoever in not learning.)

Additionally, throwing around how busy you are is insulting. Everyone I know is busy. Time is equally valuable to all humans. That's simply another reason why I will no longer respond. You have proven unwilling to spend the time doing the work my answers require.

I will finish my correspondence with you with another assignment: carefully re-read your top post in this topic. Parse it. Replace pronouns with their referents. Replace nouns with their definitions. Your post is unintelligible. Making your question intelligible is not my part of the bargain. Once again, it's yours.

Kirby,

I am asking questions. I have been working on this for two weeks now solid. I have read and printed out and re-read and marked up your threads. I have printed out the entire contents of the Aperture documentation and I have read and marked this up. I am asking questions to finalize this effort. I have thanked you for your help.

Can you respond to the direct question(s) or ask me to clarify it if you don't understand?

Thanks.

Jon -- every word I've written in this thread asks you to clarify what you mean. When I say "Your post is unintelligible", it means, "Your post is unintelligible". That you respond by asking me:

hotwheels 22 wrote:

... yet again illustrates plainly that you either do not read, do not understand, or do not care to show understanding of what I write.

Is it helpful for me to write: "Your post in unintelligible. Please clarify it."? Do you not understand the parts I wrote about parsing your sentences and replacing the pronouns with their referents? Have you somehow missed where I've said over and over and over and over that Aperture has parts, those parts have specific names and specific behaviors, and that you have to use the names correctly and make the effort to understand those behaviors?

Here is your post:

  1. Define "the same Version". It's a clumsy usage, and meaningless here.
  2. "a folder with the same version-master". Folders hold containers and only containers. The last time I told you this I mentioned that you had already been told this repeatedly.
  3. "the same version-master". "Version-Master" is not a term used by Aperture. Inventing your own terms is not going to help you understand anything. Use accepted terms.
  4. "some source material". What is "source material"? Another term that has no meaning in this context. Specify what you mean.
  5. "Source material ... that can also easily get to this image". While this is passably grammatical, as it stands it has no useful meaning.
  6. "get to this image". What Image? To what are you referring when you say "this image (Emphasis added)."
  7. "I'd like the Project and the Albums that I am working on". How does this apply to what has come before?
  8. "Project with the image and the Albums ... to be in the same folder". There is nothing stopping you from putting Projects and Albums in the same Folder.
  9. "Do I have to re-import the image". You do not import images. You import files.
  10. "in order to do this". To do what?

Those are ten things you should have resolved _prior_ to posting, and should have resolved in response to my informing you that your post was unintelligible, instead of asking me to point out why your post is unintelligible.

Hi Kirby.

I see I used "folder" when I meant "Project". I'll read your comments closely. I will print them out, likely mark them up and then respond tomorrow. I do follow your responses very closely even if it does not appear so.

Hopefully by tomorrow we will be on the same page.

I think part of the problem is that the terminology within Aperture is not very good and I have not seen it used in a more precise way or I would use it in that manner.

One thing that was important for me to recognize is that I have the same /image/ in multiple Projects or even within the same Project due to the consequence of my porting this information from windows environment. Also in some cases I have accidentally imported the same folder of images twice or even hooked up my digital camera or my iphone to my computer twice and imported images into Aperture.

These kinds of thing are easier to manage once you have slashed through the brush and arrived at a methodology and as everyone knows old habits are hard to break.

Anyway, what do you think we should call these? "Multiple Versions of the same Images that have Multiple Verisons in Multiple Albums"? Or "Multiple Versions from multiple imports that reside in multiple Projects or even in the same Project and have multiple representations in the form of multiple Versions in multiple Albums"?

I know it is a database and I know it is my fault etc, etc

Jon

Jon, we have answered the same questions over and over. You should be able to answer these questions by now on your own.

The advice we gave you repeatedly was:

  1. RTFM - read the ... manual; you said, you have done so, but it is not enough just to go thru the motions, you have to put effort into trying to understand it.
  2. Learn the terminology and the design concept: That is not only vocabulary to learn, but the semantics and pragmatics, the meaning of the structures inside Aperture and how to use them.
  3. We told you several times to create your own experimental Aperture library; to experiment with the system and to find your answers by exploring the system. You will not get anywhere without doing just that. It is high time for you to start with learning by doing, and on your own.

Good Luck

Léonie

Jon, these threads with unclear questions from you and desperate attempts by me to make head or tails from your questions didn't help you at all but have proven to be misleading and confusing to other newbies like you seeking helpful answers here. We must not continue to fill this board with material that is dangerous to newbies.

Maybe you do not like this, but for me it was frightening when I notices yesterday that these threads were very confusing to other people seeking help like you, and that by trying to help you I had put this great board at risk.

Nov 4, 2011 6:57 AM in response to léonie

Hi. I think the question is clear and it is based upon reading the manual front to back.

I may have accidentally used "Folder" instead of "Project" but in any case RTFM is rude and disrespectful.

I will post back with a clarification on this post but I don't see what the problem is. I can see why my database (which is coming from 10 years of working in a windows environment) may cause confusion in terms of trying to explain it to Mac users that have the luxury of "starting fresh" or having already worked this out but I don't see that my use of Aperture is uninformed or my use of the board is abusive.

If you don't want to answer a question that is fine. If you do that would be even better. But short of actually sitting in front of my database I can't see how your telling me what I am doing or whether I have read the manual is productive or respectful.

I also find the point about the newbies to be irrelevant. The point of my clearing up these questions and posting back my understanding, once clearing them up, is exactly to leave a trail for others in case they find the wording of the post header (because they have a similarly worded question).

In this case I am used to working from "source material" (i.e. images in folders) that I take to perform certain editing operations on or that I use to move copies to folders. This is a windows environment and it is also BTW the exact same way I am going to be working on the Mac with images that I have exported from Aperture which I need to use and or organize /outside/ of the database. If and of this is unclear please just ask me to clarify and not start swearing or calling me names.

I'll clarify Kirby's questions a little later in the day (thanks Kirby) but I am simply trying to find out if I can do this in Aperture in a convenient way. I have a very long list of Folders and Project and Albums which goes off the screen if I open them all and simply dragging and dropping from one Project to another Album that is in a different location can be a bit tedious. Also, I am organizing my images in Projects by THEME not by SHOOT. This means that images that are similarly themed are together. There is really no other way. In some cases there may be images that would be best in two or more Project because they relate to two or more THEMES.

I'm simply asking if this can be done in a convenient manner. Again, I may be misusing the terms or the question may not be clear but telling someone they are dumb or telling them they haven't read the manual or swearing at them (or all three) is not for me, thanks.

Goodwill.

Hi.

I'm really sorry if these questions sound the same as ones that you helped me with a week or two ago. I know that must be really frustrating and I want to really and sincerely apologize for that. Again, I know this must be frustrating. Imagine what it is like trying to learn the software!

Anyway, I think they are different questions and that maybe they aren't worded in a way that allows you to see they are different?

In any case, sorry for the frustration (and the mixup) and thanks for the earlier help!

Goodwill.
