HELP - Aperture cannot be opened because of a problem?

I just upgraded from 3.2 to 3.2.1 and it will not start.

Error message:

Aperture cannot be opened because of a problem.

Check with the developer to make sure Aperture works with this version of Mac OS X. You may need to reinstall the application. Be sure to install any available updates for the application and Mac OS X.

Hello Michael,

this morning we have seen a similar problem, with the parts of the Cocoa-frameworks missing, that could not be loaded.

see this thread https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3460713?answerId=16615928022#16615928022

In your case it is another part of the System Library that seems to be missing, but perhaps the solution above might work. I see from the error log that the Framework

/Library/Frameworks/iLifeFaceRecognition.framework/Versions/A/iLifeFaceRecognit ion

cannot be loaded. Check your System Library if this Framework really is missing, as described in the thread above.

If that should be the case, try to reinstall the Framework from a Time Machine Backup, if you have one, otherwise you need to reinstall your System.

Good Luck

Léonie

Anyone else please, Lion-Aperture problem?

Michael,

as you are not an experienced Mac-User, and Lion is so new that I never needed to reinstall Lion (knock on wood) I do not feel confident in guiding you thru the reinstall, since I do not have any previous experience with what might happen if you try that.

If you bought a machine with Lion preinstalled - what I assume will be the case if you bought your iMac with Lion preinstalled, then you probably will have no Lion install DVD and will have to reinstall from the AppStore, booting into the Recovery Partition of your Mac, which very different from any previous installations I have done.

Some questions before we can proceed:

  • Do you have a Time Machine Backup or any other backup of your Harddisk?
  • Did you buy your machine with Lion preinstalled?
  • Do you have a Lion Install DVD or Disk?

Before you try to reinstall let's see, if we can get away without it. If a reinstall will be destructive will depend on the type of installation - a clean install (completely erase the system partition) or a regular install - only replace the system, leaving the Applications and user data.

If you have not recently done so, open the Apple-menu (click on the  in the upper left corner of your screen) and select "Software update". If the software update utility offers any new Lion or Aperture updates for your machine, install them.

If there were recent updates, try if Aperture now does start properly.

To explain a little what is wrong with your System:

Any MacOS- Application, like Aperture, uses software libraries, called frameworks, to interact with the operating system. Those frameworks, that are used by many Applications, are not included in the Application package, but installed in the Frameworks Folder of the System Library, and your Applcations reference this Library if they need these Frameworks.

Your error message says, that the following Framework is missing.

/Library/Frameworks/iLifeFaceRecognition.framework/Versions/A/iLifeFaceRecognit ion

If you have a Backup, it would be easy to restore this Framework from the Backup - hopefully someone else can chime in and help you do that.

If you do not have a backup, then it might be safer to repost your question in the MacOS Lion Forum.

I have to be off to work now and will not be back online until the afternoon.

Regards

Léonie

Hello Leonie

I really appreciate the time you have taken here. To answer your questions;

1. This machine was pre-installed with Lion. It had to be updated to 10.7.2 in order to run the purchase of Aperture 3.2

2. Everything ran great till the upgrade of Aperture to 3.2.1 (just yesterday)

3. I have not yet configured Time Machine ;-( Bad on me

I will report to the Lion forum as well

Thank you again

I see that sofar there have been no answers to your post in the Lion Forum - too bad.

Create a working backup of your System before you proceed with any trouble shooting.

To reinstall Lion you will need a reliable network connection.

The procedure is as follows:

You boot into the recovery HD (a special, hidden partion on your harddrive)

- hold down Command()-R while you boot the System.

You will see a panel that allows you different System Maintainance operations, most importantly Disk Utility to check your System Drive ans Reinstall Lion. It might be a good idea to run the Disk Utility before you install, just in case.

- this is how far I tested the procedure. I stopped short of reinstalling my own system 🙂.

The installer will download Lion from the App-Store and reinstall it, it will probably be a previous Version of Lion.

You will have to run software Update from the Apple menu again and to check the Apple Store for availabe Updates, to install to the most recent Version 10.7.2.

While you are creating your backup, hopefully somebody will have posted here who has additional advice for you.

Hello Leonie

I want to thank you again for all your input and help. This incident has been resolved by;

1. "trashing" Aperture

2. Going to App Store, downloading and installing again

Again, as you said it certainly looks like Library contents for iLife were missing. Perhaps they are part of the Aperture install. So to recap;

1. I have a new iMac running Lion

2. It was forced to upgraded 10.7.2 prior to the Aperture 3.2 install from the App Store

3. Upgraded to Aperture 3.2.1 and it did not launch with this error message "Aperture cannot load because of a problem"

4. Trashed Aperture

5. Downloaded and reinstalled from the App Store

All is well now
