Plug your headphones back in and unplug them 3 times quickly. My original iPhone used to do that all the time but my iPhone 4 hasn't done it yet. Was hoping that this was no longer an issue.
Let me add this suggestion...When I use my headphones I always hit the volume up or down button after I umplug them. When you see the volume going up or down on the screen it will show you if it thinks the headphones are plugged in or not. That way you can take care of it then and there. It's annoying to find out a few hours later and no headphones are close by!
yea pluging in a headphone a few times did not fix the problem. The headphones work, but when I unplug them the phone keeps saying they are plug in, so I have to either use speaker phone or the headphones to talk to someone.
The headphone port is really sensitive, if something is stuck down there it will trigger the phone to think there are headphones are in. It is so sensitive that it will even register water. Try cleaning out the dock with a piece of tissue, if there's some sort of lint, this should hopefully clean it out, and if there's water, this will dry it. If there is still moisture and you can't reach it, try hairdrying it ON A LOW TEMPERATURE, although this is not advisable and the tissue should be tried first. I have had this experience with an iPod touch and iPhone 4, both times when I split water over them.
I went through **** with this today... I've tried everything. Air duster, sucking, blowing, hair dryer, rice, freezer, headphone pull in and out, q tip, and finally I decided to do the headphone trick.. It worked.. I had to pull it out in different angles but I finally got it
OMG Thank you sooooo much its been like this for 3 weeks now AND THAT WORKED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If anyone has this problem this fixes ^

Thanks so much for the tips! A little bit of compressed air did the trick for me! 😀
I used the q-tip to clean the inside of the earphone jack. There was a little bit of lint in there but that did not work. So I sucked the earphone jack and turned of the phone and turned it back on & that seemed to do the trick. Hope you're able to fix yours
None of this is working for me! Ive tried everything
Perhaps a trip to the Apple Retail store genius bar would help you.
HTH
Thanks everyone for the help
A full restart fixed it for me!
If you think there is water/moisture in your jack, take a blow dryer, put it on maximum power and high heat, then blow directly into the jack for about 3 minutes. This worked for me.
SSomeone suggested sucking on the headphone port to clear any dust dirt and it worked for me!
