Q: iPhone 4s location wrong... Why?

My location on my 4s is completely out, it says I'm about 30 miles away from where I actually am.  It does this 90% of the time! And I'm not sure what I can do to fix it.  My iPad 2 and other family members iPhone 4 on the same wifi etc. doesn't have any prOblems with this.

The problem will be solved if you reset network settings.

I am in Greece. I think that it may have something to do with Siri. It happened to me once two weeks ago. Since then i had disabled Siri cause i just dont use it. I had not this location issue again. Today i enabled Siri  just to play with some questions. And the problem appeared to me tonight again. Location showed me on Russia! OK maybe it is just a coincidence but  maybe you should try it.

Anyway, the problem goes away if you just reset network settings but of course it can happen again.

And... is this problem affecting only Europeans?

I put in some feedback on the Apple Feedback link kindly provided earlier, but of course I don't expect to be contacted about it.  When I have some free time, I will contact my provider Vodafone as well.

The bizarre thing is when I'm at work, the location services is spot on with wifi and 3g, it picks my location perfectly - but when I'm at home, it defaults back to Lubiana, Slovenia on wifi ... hmm must check 3g, can't recall if I have or not I was so wild about it last night lol.

You would think that with so many people complaining about this issue since the beginning of last MONTH that Apple would have made some kind of announcement!  Location services ... pretty important to using integral iPhone apps don't ya think?

I'm guessing this is a big issue for them and they are keeping quiet about it for now

I think I have found a simple solution that appears to work without having to reset anything.

Check Setting>General>Date & Time is set to automatic and note the timezone displayed .Power the phone off and go outside so you have a clear line of sight to the sky.  Power the phone on again & wait 1-2 minutes, go to Maps and wait for the GPS assist to kick in, check your location in Maps.  Once that's locked on you should find everything is back to normal, or at least you are in the right timezone!

I don’t know if this is a permanent fix because I found that if I go back to Date & Time while indoors my location more often than not seems to revert to Cairo, when I’m actually in the UK.  For not a least it seems unwise to go to Date & Time settings while indoors.

Substantially less than ideal, but this method does seem to work.

****!!!!  I spoke to soon, just looked at my phone & I'm back in Cairo, arghhh.

Going back outside to get a GPS signal and everything sets back to the right location. Very strange and it only seems to have happened in the past 24 hours.  Anybody any other ideas?

No offence Dave but we shouldn't have to be jumping through hoops to try and make something work, that should just bloody work!  I forked out a lot of money for this device that isn't as magical as Apple would have us believe.

Frankly I'm starting to get ****** off. The gps has been working fine all day at my work, and also even when I got home but in the last half hour my location is registering in Bishkek, Kyrgyz-freaking-stan. I am not happy.

I've had friends recommend I get an Android. I laughed them off initially but now I'm starting to think about it.

What really annoys me is that these discussion forums are bound to be monitored by Apple employees but nobody is shedding any light on the problem, or even letting their customers know that they are at least looking into it. *****!

    End of rant.

No offence taken at all, we are all sharing the pain.

I definately think this is a problem with the iPhone 4/4S though, my Ipad2 picks up my correct location straight away, every time indoors...and its 10cm away from my phone.

Just to add one more point, I tried my wifes iPhone 4 (mine is a 4S) a few minute ago and the location detection works perfectly.  With both phones side by side, hers has the correctly location, mine has be back in Cairo yet again.

Reading some of the other posts, it seems swapping the phone isn't the answer sadly

Cool. I've calmed down now lol and do appreciate your and others' valiant efforts to try and make sense of this.

I've booked a time to have an Apple advisor call me tomorrow. I'll let yas know how that goes.

Spakoyni nochee (good night in Russian - might as well learn something new from these places I'm virtually travelling to).

Have reset network settings on iPhone and switched off all location services except map, I was back where I should be for 20 minutes, (Ireland). In the last 24 hrs I've been in China and Russia according to my iPhone and am back in China again so that didn't work.

After several phone calls to apple and also on my second IPhone 4s. I am getting no where. Day after day my location has been telling me I am in Dumfries when I am actually 200 miles from that location. Today for some reason it now tells me I am in Africa! I now think My Location Services is fed up and gone on its holiday. Staff at Apple seem to be at a loss with this issue, and blame everything except the Iphone for the problem. This issue seems to affect all networks. The latest info I have been told is that the IPhone 4s is working out your location using 3 different services and apparently is getting confused where as previously the IPhone 3g and 4 were only using 2 services to determine your location. I am at a total loss where to go next as I have tried so many ways to get round this issue. My opinion is that we will either have to put up with it or revert back to Smoke Signals for communication.

That's not good enough, its clearly an issue with iPhone 4 as either HW or SW.  I suggest we all start hammering Apple to increase the volume of reports of this issue Apple Product Feedback
