Screen won't lock using smart cover

About two weeks after successfully upgrading my iPad 2 to iOS 5, my screen will no longer lock when I close the smart cover. The "iPad Cover Lock/Unlock" button is turned "ON" in Settings, and I can hear the "click" sound when I close the cover, however my iPad is still unlocked when I open the cover. Anyone else seeing this?

This sounds silly, but it does automatically unlock when you open the cover. could you be seeing that? thinking it's not locking when it does lock but unlocks the second you open the cover.

Like whataboutme said, unless you have it set to ask for a passcode when it's opened, it basically snaps back to life the second the cover is opened. It only truly locks if you set the passcode.

Maybe I'm just going nuts then! I could have sworn that whenever I closed, then opened the smart cover, my iPad would go back to the lock screen (just like when you hit the power button to lock your iPad) and I'd have to use the slide to unlock button to get back to the home screen. I don't have a passcode set, so I'd just get the "slide to unlock" slider at the bottom of the screen.

For example, If I'm using the Mail app and close the smart cover.....I'm still in the Mail app when I open the cover again. This behavior holds true for any app....not just Mail.

This is NOT a big deal and if I really want to lock my iPad, I'll set a passcode. I was just curious because I thought for sure that after opening the smart cover, I used to be sent to the lock screen.

Thanks for both responses!

Jason, you are not nuts. On mine, sometimes the magnets dont line up exactly, or move around a little after it is closed. If it closes, and locks ( the click) and the magnet moves a little, the pad thinks you have opened to the cover, and turns back on. I got into the stupid habit of peeking under a slight gap on the side to see if it was really off or not. Kind of like chasing the refridgerator light. In any event, it really does not matter much. If the pad thinks it is open, the timer shuts it down in 2 minutes anyway.( depending on your setting.).

I got so obsessed that i was going to cut a small viewport in the cover so i could see if it went off or not, until my wife told me to get a grip.....

I have a Zagg Logitech keyboard cover with magnetic cover lock. Because of the way it is designed you can see that when the keyboard is placed on the iPad that the unit automatically goes into sleep mode. I have the passcode lock set for 15 minutes. If I remove the keyboard before 15 minutes, the iPad comes out of sleep mode as if it didn't even go into sleep mode. After 15 minutes, the lock screen appears.

Jason... I'm having the exact same problem. It used to work just fine, as you describe... I would close the cover, the screen would go black, and when I'd reopen the cover I would have to unlock (NO password because I didn't choose to have one) by sliding to unlock. Now when I open the cover it's already unlocked. I guess it really doesn't make a difference.

Add me to the list. Prior to upgrading to IOS 5.1, I was required to enter my passcode each time I opened my smart cover (this was required by our IT department). Since the upgrade, I can open the cover and immediately have access without the passcode. I have checked and rechecked all the settings and have reset twice...no luck. I will turn to our IT folks and if they have any ideas, I'll post here.
