Using iMessage abroad on Wi-Fi

Hi, I am currently living in Germany and I have both an iPhone 3GS (US plan with AT&T) and an iPad 1 (having same issue with both). I was in the states when iOS 5 came out and I immediately updated. My iMessage was working perfectly fine in the states. (I understand that iMessage only works with other iOS 5 users). I was able to iMessage my mom to her iPad 2 and I was able to iMessage my husband to his German iPhone 3GS while he was in Germany (both obviously with iOS 5 installed). But, now that I am back in Germany, iMessage doesn't work at all. I am connected to Wi-Fi and currently have data roaming turned OFF. When I open a new message to my Mom's iPad (back in the states) and my husband here in Germany, it knows that it will be an "iMessage" (as it says "iMessage" in the text box where I would begin typing and for other people without iMessage it just says "Text Message"). After I type a message and send, it is blue and appears to try sending, but eventually it says "Message Send Failure". Also, I am also unable to receive an iMessage. It is my understanding that this should work. Any ideas why it's not or am I wrong and it's not supposed to work that way? Thanks in advance for your help!

I finally got it working on both my iPad and iPhone thanks to another message. In case anyone else is having this same problem...here is what fixed it:

Went to Wi-Fi settings and clicked on blue arrow to the right hand side and tapped on DNS area, deleted what was there, and changed to 8.8.8.8.

On another note:

I am an AT&T Customer and right now I am in Norway.

I have my iPhone in Airplane mode with Data and 3G turned to OFF. I have Wi-Fi turned ON, which allows me to use iMessage (although there is an error message saying I need to turn Airplane mode off for this to work.)

I´m guessing AT&T can´t charge me anything for using iMessage when I am only using wireless??

It is working perfectly, but I´m hoping this only counts as being logged onto a wireless network, not as sending an international text? Surely I can´t be charged when I am not connected to any international phone network?

Please answer! Thank you

To my knowledge, turning 3G off only saves on battery. Your phone will just resort to the Edge network. With Data turned off...you're preventing unknowlingly accruing charges for data (i.e. sending iMessages (when not using WiFi), surfing the internet, checking email, using gps, etc).

Currently, my phone is setup with Airplane mode OFF (because having it ON restricts your phone from using any signal, whether it be WiFi or Cellular), 3g ON, Cellular Data OFF and I'm connected to the WiFi in my house. With that said...I can still text the US AND be charged for a text message. The way to be sure you're sending an iMessage (which is free) and not a text message (which costs $$) is to make sure the white area where you begin typing your message says "iMessage" (to the left of the "send" button). If it says "Text Message", you will be charged for a text. After you send the iMessage, your message will appear in a blue bubble. After you send a text message, your message will appear in a green bubble. iMessage ONLY works with other iPhone/iPad users who have updated to iOS 5. (Make sure Cellular Data is OFF or you will accrue data charges for iMessages).

Hope this helps!

Ok, thanks a lot!

I am not trying to call or anything with my phone, just iMessage a few people. Therefore I have it in flight mode, with Wi-Fi manually turned on. I know they´re iMessages because they appear in blue! So what I basically want to make sure is that AT&T cannot charge me for the messages I send over my own Wi-Fi when I´m not connected to any phone network...

I´m guessing this counts as nothing but using my own wireless network, which should cost no money? When my phone is in airplane mode it should not be possible to send any SMS messages? Therefore, no ridiculous international charges?

I have been trying to look at my wireless account online, but I don´t know how to figure out if there are extra charges before my new bill shows up on the 24th.

Thanks a lot for your help!

I have a question. My son is in Europe with his iPhone and I am home in Canada with my iPhone, we can iMessage to each others phone number and/or email with no charges from telus? He has airplane mode on,wifi on, 3G off, cellular data off and data roaming off and he has been I messaging me with no problem when he has wifi. I am just nervous that I may get charged to iMessage him from home. How does that work?

I don't know if I'm missing something, but when I try to send a message to someone who has an iPhone, I don't see the iMessage sign nor does the blue colour come up. I have iMessage turned on in my settings.

My daughter lives abroad and has an iPhone, and if I send her an ordinary SMS it is not included in my monthly plan, so using iMessage would be ideal. How can I make sure that any text I send her will be an iMessage?

You don't have to be on wifi to use iMessage. You can be out and about chatting away in iMessages on a 3G network! Thats the beauty about iMessages, is that even though your using cellular connection (3G), all your text messages are free if you're using iMessages between your iPhone, or any iMessage compatible device (such as iPod touch, iMac, and iPad) to another iPhone or iMessage compatible device. Oh, and yeah both phone number and email will send an iMessages. Although, if you're using an email to send your iMessages, make sure the person has your email, so the person doesn't get confused who the recipient is. This happenend to me a while ago.

Joy R, to answer your question. To check if your sending an iMessage, look for a blue speech bubble next to the persons name. If the blue bubble isn't next to the recipients name, likely chance the other person has iMessages disabled. Also a blue and gray text color is a give away that you're using imessages as well.

Actually, you're in for a treat. Apple released a beta version of iMessages for all mac computers. The non-beta version of iMessages will appear in the new OS system OS X Mountain Lion.

In this beta version, you're able to use your AIM, Yahoo, etc instant messaging services, AND also send sms text to any iPhone/iPad/Mac users. Just log in with your account Apple ID account and you'll be able to send iMessages from your Mac to your friends or, familys iMessage capable device and this works also vice versa.

Just make sure, on your iPhone, or iMessage capable device that you change your caller ID to your Apple ID email, so you'll be able to get all the messages from your iPhone to your mac or, vice versa.

Here's the beta version that all Mac users can download:
