The apple mail program does start up and the inbox is populated with old emails. But it has not recived any new emails since yesterday morning around 9 am. The guy at the apple store suggested (1) deleting and retyping the password to the email account - that did not work, (2) clicking on "Windows' "Activity" - I am not sure what to look for, but it looks like it is performing each function - maybe not completing it ??, and (3) Mail Connection Doctor shows a green light that mail was able to connect to internet and connection an dlogin to server, and (4) then I deleted the sbcglobal email account and then added it back. None of this helped. He suggested we call sbcglobal or check internet forums. I also have the microsoft outlook for mac installed and the sbcglobal email account still syncs and works with the outlook email program. This sbcglobal account is also working fine on my wife's iphone. The computer is a 27" mac desktop with the lion operating system.

I have a basic undertsanding of some of the software and systems and can fish around and generally fix problems - but I have not been able to figure this problem out and my level of expertise is very basic - nowhere near even intermediate expertise.

Thanks for taking the time on this problem and any ideas are appreciated.

Call the abc/AT&T tech support and tell them you have a problem connecting to your email account and that you need to talk to their Mac specialist. In my experience with them they have been outstanding in resolving any and every problem. You will probably have to go thru the standard "turn off your modem and leave off for 30 seconds, same for router if you have one then reboot your computer. Sometimes that actually works with connection type problems but if it doesn't work they will probably reset your password.

I would try and rename the following files, to see, if all mail will be downloaded after doing so:

~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData/MessageUidsAlreadyDownloaded3

~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData/MessageUidsAlreadyDownloaded3-shm

~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData/MessageUidsAlreadyDownloaded3-wal

Please make sure to put the original files back with their correct names, should the procedure not help.
