You will need to both enable File Sharing and configure the AirPort for Port Mapping.

The following are the basic steps to do so:

  1. Start the AirPort Utility > Select the 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn,) and then, note the IP address shown.
  2. Select Manual Setup.
  3. Verify that Connection Sharing = Share a public IP address is selected on the Internet > Internet Connection tab.
  4. Select Disks, and then, select File Sharing.
  5. Verify that both the "Enable file sharing" and "Share disks over WAN" options are enabled.
  6. Verify that Secure Shared Disks = With a disk password. (Recommended)
  7. Verify that AirPort Disks Guest Access = Not allowed. (Recommended)
  8. Select Advanced, and then, select the Port Mapping tab.
  9. Click the plus sign to add a new port mapping.
  10. For Service, select the "Personal File Sharing" option. (Note: This option would only allow Mac clients to access the AirPort Disks. If you want both Macs and PCs to connect, you would need to leave this field at its default value and enter the appropriate SMB ports to the mix of ports to be opened.)
  11. In the Public UDP Port(s) and Public TCP Port(s) boxes, type in a 4-digit port number (e.g., 8888) that you choose. In the Private IP Address box, type the internal IP address of your AEBSn that you wrote down in step 1. In the Private UDP Port(s) and Private TCP Port(s) boxes, type 548. Click Continue.
  12. In the Description box, type a descriptive name like "AirPort Disk File Sharing," and then, click Done.
  13. Click on Update.

To connect to the shared AirPort Disk from a remote location using a Mac:

  1. From the Finder > Go > Connect to Server.
  2. Enter the DynDNS-provided Domain Name or Pubic (WAN-side) IP address of the AEBSn, followed by a colon and the Public port number that you choose in step 11 of the previous procedure. For example: afp://www.mydyndnsdomain.com:8888 or afp://123.456.789.123:8888
  3. Click Connect.
  4. You should be prompted for your user name and password. The user name can be anything you like; the password should be the Disk password for the AEBSn that you created in step 6 previously.
  5. Click Connect.

Then I follow all the steps corrtectly untill step 11.If I want to change the IP adress to the one I noted down in step 1. I can not. The computer shows an IP adress 10.0.1.1 And I can only change the last number 1. If I paste my IP number the continue button goes grey and I cannot continue. I cannot put the right IP adress in.

Tesserax;

thank you for the detailed instructions. Unfortunately it does not work for me. There may be two reason to which I have questions:

1. I have a fixed IP from my ISP, where would I enter it?

2. I have a VOIP router beforre the Airport Extreme, i.e. Internet -> VOIP Router -> Airport Extreme. The VOIP router must be first in line (the only way it will work). Therefor my Airport has the address: 192.168.0.2 (as Internet address). Is there any way to make this work?

Thank you in advance.

If you are using the Lion operating system, download and install AirPort Utility 5.6 for Mac OS X Lion

If you are using Mountain Lion, you can can manually extract the AirPort Utility 5.6 application from the download package and then drag the application to the Utilities folder

AirPort Utility 5.6 is far more useful than the "new" versions of AirPort Utility, which have much fewer features and options.

The instructions that Tesserax posted earlier will track just fine using AirPort Utility 5.6.

I am running Mountain Lion so how do I "manually extract the AirPort Utility 5.6 application from the download package and then drag the application to the Utilities folder"? I downloaded the package but Mountain Lion won't let me do anything with it.

Isn't there a way to share the drive over the Internet using the new Utilities in Mountain Lion? Was mountain Lion set up to NOT allow Internet Sharing?

looks like your voip is in the 192.168.0.x range and you are trying to forward your ports to a 10.0.1.x range

your voip router is the router on the network, and the extreme should just be acting as a bridge or access point....you should set the extreme to a static ip in the 192.168.0.x range and put it into bridge mode....

the port forwarding likely needs to happen at the router level

Hi,

I just tried to use this tutorial to share my HD over the internet but it didn't work for me. I have a Mac OS Lion 10.7.5 and my Airport Extrem Firmeware 7.6.3 and Airport Utility 6.2. When I try to connect I get a "... maybe the server doesn't exist or it is not available at the moment...".

Bellow is my config screen. Note that it has two warning messages:

- IPv6 settings incorrect

- Double NAT

My port foward config settings are like bellow.
