hey there,
i just realised that my finder shows in the staus bar that i have 272gb available. the thing is my mac is only 199gb big?
and if i go the apple symbol and than about this mac etc... it show me that i only have 117gb free space and that apparently i have 154 gb on back ups on my mac
any help please

Are you using Time Machine?
Lion has a new 'snapshot' backup:

To turn off local snapshots, in Terminal enter:
sudo tmutil disablelocal

how do i delete the local snapshots my mac did in the past so that i have more space on my mach and that the status bar shows the correct size avalibility ???
sudo tmutil disablelocal will also delete local snapshots:
disablelocal
Turn off local Time Machine snapshots and trigger automatic
cleanup of accumulated local snapshot data.
Had the same thing on my MacBook Air with a 256gb SSD.
Finder was showing 177gb available. Disk Utility said 54gb.
I ran the Terminal command suggested by others. And a MIRACLE happened! 😮
Now Disk Utility says I have 155gb available. But Finder reports an incredible 709gb of free space... on my 256gb drive!
It must be a blessing from Steve Jobs. 😉

I disabled the local backups to clear the space. Disk space still showed incorrect, but when I re-enabled the local backups Finder and Disk Utility match as there are no local backups currently.

hi, what is the coding for disabling and re-enabling. is entering these codes dangerous??? does it delete anything i dont want deleted?
