"Mobile Documents" folder missing

I have a MacMini and a MacBook Pro. On both I installed Lion

On the Mini I have the "Mobile Documents" folder, on the MacBook not.

How come?

Is there a solution for that?

Mac mini, Mac OS X (10.7.2)

Ok, I just did a little playing around and this is what I have discovered. I went into the computer without the Mobile Documents folder and created one myself. I went into Users in System Preferences and under my Admin ID I clicked on Apple ID (under user photo) and reentered my Apple ID info that I was using with iCloud. I restarted my system and when I double clicked on the Mobile Documents folder all the sub-folders that are supposed exist within it (~com~Apple~Keynote, etc) were all there. Any documents you want to sync with the other computer should be in that folder. You can then create an alias of any of those documents and place them wherever you want to use them from. I even drug the Mobile Documents folder over to the Favorites in Finder. I put the alias on the desktop. I have now been able to go between the laptop and the iMac and work on the same numbers file. It is my understanding you can put any kind of files in the Mobile Documents folder and do the same thing.

Hope this helps you!

Hmmmmm....are you sure you created it in the correct 'Library' folder....I know there are a couple different locations of Library folders....also I would be sure I created it exactly like the original Mobile Documents (meaning with the spelling and space). Might also try adding the sub folders myself....the worst thing that can happen is that it doesn't work and you will have to manually delete the folders you created.

I have placed PDF's and various other types of files into my folder and they are all syncing across both computers.

BTW, my computers are in different locations--actually different cities--and they are syncing just fine. A file updated on the iMac this morning shows the update on my MBP almost immediately after it is done.

Hope this helps you....let me know.

OK, so I was able to solve the same exact problem that you were having.

Problem: My documents would not sync from iCloud to my MacBook Pro. My iMAC and MacBook Air worked without any special setup. I should note that none of my computers have Notes, Pages, or Keynote installed as I use MS Office. I am only interested in sync'ing Documents on all of my MACs. To resolve the issue, I would create the Mobile Documents folder in /users/<username>/Library. When I would reboot, the folder would be removed by the OS. I tried everything mentioned in this article and others and NOTHING worked. This started to feel like the good ol' Windows days!! Oh, I should mention that I called Apple directly and they had no idea what I was doing 😝

Resolution: I decided that the quickest solution to my problem was to simply install one of the productivity applications from Apple such as Numbers, Pages, or Keynote. Since I've always wanted to check out Keynote anyway and it was only $19.99, I opted for the download. After installation, I created a Keynote file and saved it to my Documents folder. I then logged in to www.icloud.com with the AppleID I use on all my MACs. I tried dragging the keynote file to the website as suggested and nothing happened. Nice. I then switched over to check on my Mobile Documents folder and it was there!!! All my files had sync'd too!! Best $19.99 I ever spent.

What I would do next time: I would setup iCloud on ALL computers at the same time logged in to the same network. The only difference between my Air, iMAC, and Pro is that the Pro was at work and I sync'd everything up at home and just expected everything work when I went into the office. So, Apple needs to work out some bugs but I have iCloud sync'ing up ALL my documents, photos, bookmarks, and music. No complaints from this under user.

Great question but I have no idea honestly. I was really unimpressed by Keynotes apparent lack of integration with iCloud. There was absolutely no preferences or indication whatsoever that I could even sync with iCloud from my experience. What I would do if I were you is create an alias to your ~/Library/Mobile Documents folder and place it on your desktop and then save/edit files from there. My setup currently has 3 MACs that are all sync'ing each with their own Win7 Virtual Machine (VMWare fusion) which can access the Mobile Documents folder. I can show you guys how to set this up if you're interested. It's really funny from my perspective because anytime something doesn't work on MAC, I switch to Windows and vice versa. I just don't have time for computer problems these days!

Symptoms:

Noticed that my Pages document stored on iCloud would not open.

The UDP process (responsible for syncing iCloud documents) was using between 50% and 100% CPU

In my Keychain I noticed there were a TON of these: com.apple.ubiquity.peer-uuid certificates and they were growing in number, eventually my keychain would not even open.

In Library-keychains I noticed that the system constantly updating this folder

Issue:

The permissions on the "ubuquity" folder inside of "user/library/application support" did not include "Me".

Solution:

  1. I added permission for "Me" to read write to the "Ubiquity" folder inside of "user/Library/Application Support"
  2. signed out of iCloud in system preferences (I told it to remove everything from my Mac)
  3. Reset my Keychain (http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1544)
  4. Restarted
  5. signed back into iCloud
  6. Opened pages and successfuly opened all the documents on my iCloud

Note: I tried various combinations of this solution and parts of this solution, including deleting Pages and downloading it again from the App Store. Nothing worked until I followed the steps I outlined above at one time.
