Hi!
I have an odd problem with my Iphone 4s. After using a wi-fi connection at home and going out I've noticed that the phone doesn't switch automatically to 3g connection. Instead it states that there's no internet connection available at all. But if I'm restarting the phone (shut down, new start) then I get a 3g connection back immediately. This looks really annoying. Any ideas how to solve it?

I've the same problem with my 4S. Hopefully there will be a fix for this in the near future.
Anyone else with this problem?
To get my connection back I only set the flight mode to ON for 5 sec. After switching off flight mode, my 3G/GPRS is back. But this could only be a workaround for a short time :-)

I've contacted Apple support earlier this week. The only solution they could give me: back up, reset and set up the phone as new. Didn't try that yet but I also do not believe this will help as my phone is less than 1 month old anyway...A bit disappointing
Followed their advice today and restored the phone as new..Will see if it helps
Please let me know! I'm really interested in fixing this problem :-)
Just got a 4s last night and have run into the same problem.
Update: the problem is not solved. Would have to call Apple support again..

I'd like to confirm that I am suffering from the same issue with my 3 week-old iPhone 4S. I, too, need to turn flight mode on and off in order to convince my phone to switch back from a Wifi connection to 3G. So far I have tried the following:
- Received a new SIM from O2 here in Germany
- Restored my phone from backup
- Restored my phone as a new device
- Installed iOS 5.0.1
- Received a replacement phone from Apple
None of the above have rectified the situation, nor made any difference at all. Neither the Apple support hotline nor the Genius Bar employee had any idea what could be causing the problem. The only thing I have not yet tried is a SIM from another provider. I'm wondering if this is a problem with the iOS in combination with the setup of certain providers.

I would like to mention that my celullar provider is also O2 (Germany). Perhaps it has really something to do with provider..
My situation was resolved by the service provider.
Root cause was due to phone activation as the data plan was mistakenly disabled. So the phone worked from wi-fi but had no server connection when operating beyond the wi-fi reach of home or work.
Is your Settings > Network > Cellular Data ON?
Cellular data is on. Otherwise turning airplane mode on/off would not correct the situation. The problem is squarely with the automatic switching between Wifi and Mobile data.
@robcpu - Your situation is then different than ours - you had no data plan to begin with, we have functioning data plans, but our phones are not switching from Wifi to 3G until we force a network reset (Airplane mode on/off).
I got the iPhone 4S last week from Apple Online Store and use it with a Telia (Swedish network) SIM card.
At home and at work I use the Wifi network and when going outside it automatically connects to the Telia network for calls, but for some reason not for data transfer. So even if the display says Telia 3G or Telia E, I cannot use it for surfing, iMessage or checking mails etc, only to make calls, and recieve SMS.
I did contact Apple about this and they told me to turn off the SIM pin, swtich Flight mode on and back, but it still didn't want to reconnect to the network that allow data transfer.
The only thing that seem to make things right is a reboot (menu button + standby)
Apple has sent out a new device to me, but from reading the posts above, it's not sure it will solve the problem for me.
Any work arounds or other experiences from the Apple support?
