iPhone 4s: No sound keyboard, alerts, music without headphones

Anyone else out there with these same/similar issues:

  • No sound without ear buds or Bluetooth ONLY for
    • Alerts
    • Music
    • Videos
    • Keyboard Clicks
  • Lock Screen Not Locked, it changes or is blank

Brand new 4s, and there’s no sound with keyboard clicks, alerts, videos, or music without ear buds or Bluetooth headset. Ringer works, and Siri works, speaker phone works. And it does record my voice on the videos. I’ve done about six hard restarts, one restore, sprayed the plug where the ear buds plug in with canned air, and inserted and re-inserted the plug about fifty times as recommended on various threads so the phone doesn’t “think” ear buds are still plugged in.

I called Apple and they said because the ringer/speaker phone works but the alerts, music, clicks, don’t; it is most likely a software problem not hardware and they recommended a restore through iTunes.

I also took it to my local AT&T store (I bought it online through AT&T) and they were also stumped.

I did the “restore” and now my “lock” screen photo won’t stay in place even though when I check the “Wallpaper” setting’s it is still there, but does not show up when I unlock the phone unless I keep doing a hard restart.

Bottom line: Apple is saying to wait for a software upgrade in the next few weeks and if that doesn’t fix my issues I need to return the phone (which I’d rather not do) because it is guaranteed for a year…

This is my 5th iPhone (plus other 4 iPods) and NONE of the other Apple products had any issues. This is very disappointing. But I also waited about 3-6 months before purchasing them after a launch… maybe all the bugs were already resolved. So next time I will not rush to get one in the first 30 days…😟

Same problem. Went to AT&T once to get an incident report started. I had waited for 5.0.1 update to see if that corrected the problem. No change. Phone ringtone works. No other alert sounds. Music won't play through speakers, headphones only. I'll be patient a few more days but that is too much to pay to get partial functionality. I expecially want an alert sound with receiving email or text messages.

My first three macs worked flawlessly. As does my current 2008 15" macbook pro. As does my iphone 4, which my wife inherited when I got the 4S. She would have been kicking the counter (or clerk) at AT&T the 2nd day she had the phone. I'm a little more patient.

I also have the EXACT same problem. I'm doing a complete restore through iTunes now and will report how that goes, although I don't think it will solve the problem. I have a 3S as well and I'm pretty sure it had a similar problem at one time.. then there was a software upgrade and it was working fine again after that. SO I'm very much hoping this is a software problem that can be fixed with a patch... It's almost impossible for me to get to an Apple Store anytime soon for a swap... if this isn't fixed in the next few weeks/months, I hope that I can return it for a new one later. I bought it only two weeks ago!!

It works with the headphones no problem, but without the headphones it thinks it's connected to a dock. It actually says dock connection though it's not connected at all. The volume control doesn't work and there are no alert sounds and though music plays, there is no sound. Ringer works, Siri works, voice recording works.

5.0.1 update didn't fix it for me.

Someone suggested a Qtip with alcohol in the headphone jack and bottom connection? Anyone?

Same problem - even though my speakers were fine before.

Siri is now working through speakerphone but it didn't work this morning (only after i blew in my headphone plug a couple of times?)

Restored / Rebooted couple of times. Unsuccesful.

When I play music, I don't have the option of changing my volume. My Spotify says there is 'no volume available'??!

Is everyone just waiting for the next software update or should I take the phone back.

Have exactly the same issue. Driving me crazy, sometimes works then suddenly...no sound. Even as I'm typing my keyboard clicks are coming on and off!!!

What I've tried:

1. Power cycled off and on. No joy.

2. 2 button reset. No joy, although sometimes it apears to be rectfied but then suddenly fails again :(

3. Playing song whilst earphones plugged in, then carefully pulling earphones out. Works for a few seconds but then fails. So still no joy.

4. Went into settings>music>volume control. Made sure slider was moved so this option was on. This immediately resolved my problem and the iPhone worked fine until I plugged it into a docking station. Now I'm back to square 1 and this step does not resolve the issue.

5. Tried a restore as a new device to test issue with no other software on phone but still exactly the same. So no joy.

I phoned apple care. The young girl suggested perhaps I'd dropped my phone or got it wet. It's 3weeks old and has no accidental damage what so ever. It's my pride and joy. Has flip case and covers.

I really do think this is software related but the girl at apple care seemed to think I needed a replacement/repair.

I am going to try a couple of other things (like downloading a new IPSW file and trying restore) to see if I can figure out this glitch before a new update. Otherwise we could be waiting.

Any feedback is appreciated, let's see if we can get this annoyance resolve :)

Hi again,

I'm following up my post from above... I called Apple and explained what was wrong with my phone. I told him that I tried many different things suggested here and on other forums, updated it to 5.0.1, restored it through iTunes etc. and without many questions from him, he thought since I had tried the things he was going to suggest to do anyway, it was likely a hardware issue and that the phone should be returned and exchanged at the Apple Store. He said he could have sent a new phone out to my home address in the States at that moment if I were there... My problem is that I'm not in the US for the time being so I have to wait until I'm there to do this.

Interestingly, if you have an Apple TV, when I select the option to connect to it, the sounds work just fine. But, only when it's connected to Apple TV. Then it will return back to "dock connector" even though it's never been connected to a dock, ever.

My phone works fine otherwise and I even, very rarely, get the sounds to work for all of a few seconds. It seems to be a faulty connection or something so I think it's a hardware issue.

N@ Let us know if you have any results. Thanks for your post.

Can some of you others who posted here give us some updates if you can, please? Did you contact Apple about the problems you're having? Did any of you get new phones? Thanks!
