My daughter suggested trying a different view and Voila! the files appeared. I had clicked on the thumbnail view and All My Files folder was empty but using the the List or Column views made them visible.

This tip worked for me from another thread:

I found things returned to normal when I right clicked on AMF and selected "Show Search Criteria", cleared any spurious search parameters, and then Hid the Search Parameters again. I also had to select "This Mac" rather than All My Files. After that it displayed my files. You can also use the search parameters to limit what is displayed in AMF. Good luck!

I would never have known to right-click anything in the sidebar! "All my files" is a SAVED SEARCH, you see, and it can get messed up. Mine is fixed now to "see" only "kind=documents".
