when i click on finder and then "all my files", the sections with all of my files don't show, only beginning to have some appear when i type in letters under search.how do i restore it to how "all my files" was when i downloaded lion?
My daughter suggested trying a different view and Voila! the files appeared. I had clicked on the thumbnail view and All My Files folder was empty but using the the List or Column views made them visible.

Sounds like something in Finder got mucked up.
From the Finder "Go" menu hold the option key and choose Library. Then go to Preferences trash these two files:
com.apple.finder.plist
com.apple.sidebarlists.plist
Then, restart.(You will have to reset a few finder prefs the way you like them.)
This tip worked for me from another thread:
I found things returned to normal when I right clicked on AMF and selected "Show Search Criteria", cleared any spurious search parameters,and then Hid the Search Parameters again. I also had to select "This Mac" rather than All My Files. After that it displayed my files. You can also use the search parameters to limit what is displayed in AMF. Good luck!
I would never have known to right-click anything in the sidebar! "All my files" is a SAVED SEARCH, you see, and it can get messed up. Mine is fixed now to "see" only "kind=documents".

Thank you for the answer. I had a similar problem with almost all my folders appearing "blank" when accessed via finder. You solution started me in the right direction. Even though my library was "blank" using "Go," I was able to remove these 2 files through the Terminal.
Since upgrading to macOS Sierra, my All My Files folder has been empty from the get-go.
This is how I fixed this:
1. I completely logged out of iCloud on my Mac.
2. Shut down / power off.
3. Power on.
4. Log back in to iCloud.

I had the same problem. If under kind you select "any" nothing shows up in the "All My Files" folder.
I was unable to delete the file com.apple.sidebarlists.plist. Anyway, it worked after I restarted Finder.
I feel stupid saying this, but a reboot solved this problem for me. Always give it a go!
