Hi,

Has the setting for output in System Preferences > Sound > Output been lowered ?

In fact does it appear to lower itself when you start a Video chat ?

HI,

Apple Laptops have a setting in the Sound Input pane that can be set for the Ambient Noise Reduction.

Previously this has been an issue where it seemed to take on a mind of it's own and would constantly reduce the volume.

It seems it is being reported again.

However this would be the volume that you would be heard by your Buddies rather than you hearing them.

Is your Buddy using a laptop and what happens if the re-set the Input Volume ?

Hi Mike,

Ambient Noise Reduction effects the input volume of the computer. (on Laptops)

This then tends to make that computer quiet in iChat.

Therefore if Ambient Noise Reduction is factor it will be because you Buddies are using Laptop Macs and have this potential setting. (Turning On or Off does not seem to make a difference).

The Connection Doctor (Video Menu) may help.

This show the incoming Audio and Video in a graphical form (two green bars)

If there is a problem then the bars will reduce in % and then go Amber.

Further drops will go Red and potentially disappear.

However this about about Audio being Sent not the Volume it might be.

I would try an Audio Only chat to see if the Bandwidth (Internet Connection speed) is playing a factor.

They mentioned nothing about the Alert sounds which your fix would sort.

iChat sort of palys different sounds/Audio in different ways.

Incoming sound with chats (Audio) is played via the viceroy framework and is not played as if it is a System Alert sound.

The iChat > Preferences > Alerts can have different sounds linked to the different actions

while testing tha sounds on this page iChat uses Quicktime to play the sound.

However in everyday use these sounds are played as if they are System Alerts and "Fixed" if not playing properly by your fix (or turning the Volume for the Alerts/Sound Effects up).
