some itunes songs "grey" and won't play on iphone 4S?

I have a 4S, my first iphone. I did a sync from itunes, and some of my music appears "grey" on the iphone, and won't play. For example, I have Adele's 21 CD that was downloaded in apple lossless, and only half the songs are playable on the iphone- (i did convert all to 128AAC for the iphone). They are all listed on the iphone, but half are black and play normally, half are "grey" and won't play. So the song shows up on the iphone but won't play. Does anyone know why this would be happening? The songs play perfectly well on my iMac. The same music sync's to all of my ipods without a problem...

I checked "manually manage songs" and that fixed the problem! hope this helps someone else-

I have the same issue occasionally. I don't think switching to manually managed is a good solution. I do find that this issue does eventually fix itself, until it occurs again. I don't have much to add to this, other than saying that you are not alone with this issue.

If the songs appear grey, this might be an indication of media not fully synced with iTunes yet. Remember that iOS 5 no longer locks your device until a sync has completed.

I bought an iPhone 5 and could not add music to it. Same problem: grey songs. After hours searching forums and blogs I found this solution. Works for me! Now I manually add songs using iTunes and no problem. Hope it helps.

1. Download and install iExplorer http://www.macroplant.com/iexplorer/

2. Plug in device first, then open iExplorer

3. Delete the iPhone\Media\iTunes_Control folder (you may want to copy this, just in case)

4. Restart the iPhone / iPad

5. Start iTunes. Not restore iPhone from back up, select New iPhone (don't worry, you will not lost apps or data on your iPhone doing this)

6. Add music manually with iTunes

Hello, when you check the verify box, it will play sequentially!

For an example, I have a several songs that aren't check it in, so when I play the album, only songs checked goes to "playing next".

I solve this just checking all my songs again and asked iTunes Match to force an update, it solve my problem, hope I helped you!
