Looks like no one’s replied in a while. To start the conversation again, simply ask a new question.

Suggestion to Hosts: Can the display of acquired points be made optional?

. . . and under user control in the same way, for example we control publication of our email address? That way participants that don't want acquired points to display have the option of turning it off.

Thanks!

Yes, I was not clear, my suggestion was to make the level and points display optional, as one is paired with the other.

I have attempted (and apparently failed) to keep the thread focused on providing the option of including those for those who want to display it and the option to not display that info if the user chooses.

I wanted to avoid devolving the thread (as it appears to keep wanting to do) into a discussion of why someone would make the choice.

Poster WZZZ has chosen an alias, chosen to display Don Martin artwork for an avatar, and chosen to display a location. Again, my proposal is simply to allow the choice of displaying the posters awarded points (and status!).

What a user decides to do with that choice was not the subject of this thread, and some posts have confused this.

Thanks!

I wanted to avoid devolving the thread (as it appears to keep wanting to do) into a discussion of why someone would make the choice.

A discussion of why is absolutely germane. This isn't a discussion about the purpose and validity of the points system, which I'm not interested in having. It is a discussion of why points accrued and level, since that is the system we are, for better or worse, living with, should be made optional and user controlled.

My choice to provide, or not, a location and other obviously private information, such as my email address, is entirely different from showing points accrued, which is not, as far as I can see, a private matter. I think you will have to make a very good argument, instead of continually begging the question, for why this area should be considered private.

I very much appreciate your thoughtful and reasonable posts . . . but again, as I said earlier, a poster may have their own reasons to opt for the display, or not - and this thread is about obtaining the option to do so.

You have said that:

. . . showing points accrued, which is not, as far as I can see, a private matter.

In my view, I would not necessarily describe them as "private" - but the display of points, in my judgement, are appropriate to be under my control as being displayed or not. And instituting this option would apply to all posters, equally. You have the option to display a Mad Magazine artists work for your avatar. I choose not.

You like anchovies on your Pizza. I do not. Fine, just be sure to order the Pizza half with, and half without.

What has been a complete surprise to me is that there are posters that feel having this option, and allowing the user to decide is somehow . . . incorrect? . . . wrong?. . . trouble making? And yet don't offer a reason why the users points must be displayed.

Here is an example from earlier this morning -

Exhibit A - Option not enabled:

User uploaded file

And Exhibt B - Option enabled:

User uploaded file

What is the problem with exhibit B that makes it a bad idea?

For those that say the point system allows them to identify newbies, I would say this: I know something about Final Cut Studio, and how it interfaces with non-Apple broadcast gear, but know nothing about IOS5 or Lion. Yet if I were to venture into those forums, my points follow me, even though I know nothing in those areas.

As was noted early, the points/levels are an intrinsic part of the forum. They give other posters an idea of who's answers to give credence to. Without some sense of how useful people's answers have proved in the past, any answers they give to my questions are questionable. I would tend to ignore them.

I fail to see how this is a privacy issue like your location or email address. Those points have been awarded to you by other members of the forum. They are part of the public dialog. You also can't hide your posts once you've made them.

Again: I am not advocating for you, or anyone else to not display your points.

I am advocating for an option to display mine.

If I post without displaying my points and my posts are overlooked as a consequence, that is perfectly fine with me - as I have exercised my option to do so, and I understand that may be a consequence.

And as you point out, the correct answer, and helpful answers (as indicated by the OP) - will still be indicated, and will be archived and available for searching - regardless of being made by a poster that chooses to display their points or not.

Thanks!

You missed the significant arguement: Points, reputation are a purely public function. You get points for doing something publicly. They are intended as public recognition. Their entire function is to let other people know the value that the forum has given your advice. They're not something for you to take home and hide under your mattress.
