Help! iCloud synced notes disappeared!

Hi,

I am hoping that someone can help and knows if there is a way to recover my iCloud synced notes which disappeared yesterday afternoon. A bit of history first:

I am running 10.7.2 on my Mac and iOS 5 on my iPhone 4 and iPad 2. Prior to activating iCloud a few weeks ago, I was syncing my Notes across my Mac, iPhone and iPad via iTunes and everything worked great.

Once I upgraded to iOS 5 and activated iCloud, I selected the option in iTunes to sync my Notes via iCloud. This created two sets of notes on each device; the iPhone Notes app had two accounts, iPhone and iCloud; the iPad Notes app had two accounts, iPad and iCloud; and the Mac Mail app had two accounts in the Notes section, On My Mac and iCloud.

I realized that only the Notes created in the iCloud account of the respective devices would sync via iCloud. Following advice I had read here on the Apple Support Communities, I set the iCloud Notes account as the default account for both my iPhone and iPad, and moved the Notes in the Mail app on my Mac from the "On My Mac" account to the "iCloud" account. I did this a couple of weeks ago and everything had been working great; I now only had one Notes account on both my iPhone and iPad, and everything was syncing as one would expect between my iPhone, iPad and Mac.

At least everything was working great until yesterday afternoon; I opened the Notes app on my iPhone and was startled to find the app read "No Notes". I next opened the Notes app on my iPad and actually saw all of my Notes for half a second before they all disappeared and then it too read "No Notes"! I next opened the Mail app on my Mac and also had no Notes. Finally, I logged into iCloud.com and opened up the Mail app to also find that I had no Notes.

Has anyone else experienced this? Why would this have happened? I had initially backed up all of the Notes when I first made the switch to iCloud a couple of weeks ago, expecting some initial trouble with the first sync. But everything has been running smoothly for about 2 weeks, I hadn't made a backup since. Isn't iCloud supposed to be my backup? Does iCloud make a backup of itself that I can access to get all of my Notes back from yesterday morning? I am also Syncing my Calendar and Contacts via iCloud, but if this could happen to my Notes, I am afraid that it could also happen to my Calendar and Contacts.

I realize that many, if not most, of software errors are actually attributable to user error, but in this case, I do not see what I possibly could have done wrong. I don't think it's even possible to delete all of the Notes from my iPhone with one click, is it?

If there is no way to recover from a loss like this, the iCloud service is worthless. Hopefully there is a way for users to access an iCloud backup/snapshot of thier data so that losses like this can be prevented.

I do make nightly backups of my Mac via SuperDuper to an external HD, so I should have backups of my Mac's Mail app, as well as iTunes generated backups of my iPhone and iPad from when all of my notes were on iCloud. I was thinking of loading these backups while I was offline and recovering my Notes that way, but I do not know if iCloud data is available locally while offline. Does anyone know if iCloud Notes can be accessed on your Mac, iPhone or iPad if the device is offline?

Any info/insight would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Bruno

As the Notes are in the TFSM why do you think I failed to pick them up, did Iget one instruction wrong?

http://www.zubrag.com/tools/html-tags-stripper.php Will take care of most of the formatting - go from first <div> to last </div)

However there is a deliciously simple way of doing it. If we take the following:

ISDPropertyValue contentType text/html contentw Scribble Sheet<div><br></div><div>Peter - Anaesthetic dept</div><div>19 10 2011</div><div>Mileage Bexhill 16097</div><div>20 10 /011</div><div>Fuel 16346 - 254.3</div><div>Mileage Catterick 16444 - 447 miles</div><div>Fuel 16753 - 296.4 Newport Pagnel 144.9</div><div>Return Bexhill 16789</div><div><br></div><div>Recommended by Amanda - Fascinating Aida - comedy group</div> subject Scribble Sheet author T G Nash’s iPhone' com.apple.syncservices.RecordEntityName com.apple.notes.Note dateCreated dateModified? , DevHíê

If you copy and paste this into a new Notepad doc, then save it as Mynote1.htm - using the notepad Save As option under the File menu - be sure to select the save as All Files *.* option at the bottom of the save As dialogue box - choose a folder to save to and then hit Save button. If you see a box next to the save button marked Encoding - be sure it is set to UTF-8.

Go to your newly created file and right click and hit Open - it should open in a browser window - I tested a paste of your message into notepad and multiplied it several times. Saved it as an htm - then opened it in Internet Explorer. Should give you what you are looking for.

Theoretically Internet Explorer should recognise a complete copy of your Database file saved as an htm file in this way. Make a copy. Then rename it data.htm. Open in explorer and it should be automatically formatted to give you what you want.

I have got all the information on the missing notes I need. After following your instructions I made the Mynotes1 file and could see all my notes. There was still a lot of unwanted formatting when opened in I.E and I did try running this through Zubrag tools, but that seemed to make it worse. I am copying and pasting the text from MyNotes1 without any difficulty and will soon have the notes as I want them.

Thank you for all the time and effort you have put into this problem. I do not think the cause of the loss has been resolved, but I hope so or others may have had the same problem. At least they will also be able to follow your guidance.

Many Thanks Again,

Guy

Not to butt in on your conversation, but I am having the same problem with iTunes. I finally found where the "signature" is not valid. I had this problem with another program and had to go into the program and update from the properties. I have done this with iTunes several times though and it will not update, even though it said it was installed. I did that on my Vista at the office about 5 times. iTunes will not update. I just tried on my home Windows 7, but it requires a restart I believe and I am downloading (items) off internet and a slow one at that and not about to shut down in the middle of a 450+MB file, which will probably take "me" all night! HughesNet.. yeah! "lightning fast" NOT! anyway... try to update your digital signature and see if your itunes will update then for you. you can tell I am computer illeterate.. and you seem to be gettin great help and I am missing NOTES also.. so, I'm copying for later reading.. I have to call in help when it gets this techy!.😕

Like many, I too had this problem happen in the third week in July, 12 and I lost many more seriously important pages than one, so I am livid beyond comprehension. Anyone thinking they’re helping by talking iCloud or saying things like, “if you backed up your device, all you have to do is obtain your lost material from your back up,” is water over the ****. Those aiming the lost info victims in that directions, is redundant all over the web, and about as helpful as nothing at all. Duhhh…like who doesn’t know that??!! WE NEED A REASON THIS HAPPENED! WE NEED TO FIND OUT WHY THIS HAPPENED SO APPLE CAN GET THEIR BUTT IN GEAR AND SEE TO IT THIS DOESN’T HAPPEN AGAIN!!

All this talk of iCloud is only for those who leave their doors unlocked and windows wide open when they leave the house: A crime waiting to happen. Many don’t trust on-line purchasing or banking, yet they saturate the servers of iCloud with every fact and figure in their life, and yet sleep well. What is the world thinking? Anyone ever heard of HACKS???? What a mistake.

Speaking of HACKS, why don't one of you fine gentleman or ladies discover and fix this disappearing note problem so, well, you'll have something to find when you hack into iCloud!!!!

Yep, I just lost all mine but for one (the most recent one) too. I think the system got confused at some point as I was trying to get everything onto the Cloud. I (unfortunately) checked my phone without disabling the intenet connection so lost the notes on that too. I am hoping I can still get them off my iPad. Will need to shut down its connection first thing and then hopefully copy them over before they disappear. What a nasty problem we have all uncovered here. Has anyone heard of any similar problems with Evernote?

I lost my notes as well, even recently when I upgraded to Mountain Lion. ARGH!

What worked for me was SPOTLIGHT. I used a key word from one of my notes and deep in the

entrails of the computer, up popped the Note. Not easy but not lost, either. Hint for the future.

About once a month now I email myself the notes just to have belt and suspenders. On the Ipad,

swing over to spotlight - (FAR LEFT on the choices, and type in a word or two from the Notes

and you should find them.

Good luck

Another here who had his notes disappear after switching to Lion. Up until that point, all of my notes were fine on my iPad running iOS 5. After the switch on my MacBook, half of them disappeared. Not sure why only half did, but they're gone. I posted a thread about iCloud about six months ago, questioning what the whole point of it was. There doesn't seem to be one if people's data is disappearing. Wasn't the purpose of iCloud the opposite of that effect? To save data so it doesn't just magically go bye bye? Luckily I have used Time Machine for a long time, so I'll have to go looking for the notes. But this makes me question why I should be using such a service. I'm aware it's free, and beggars cannot be choosers. Still, if you're going to offer a service, make it work.

Hi all,

I just experienced this problem.

I checked the box to sync "Notes" under iCloud in System Preferences.

When I opened Notes (the application) in Mountain Lion, I watched all my local notes disappear.

Closed Notes (the application) and re-opened = nothing left.

So I closed the Notes (application)

and unchecked the box in System Preferences.

Checked the box again

And all the notes came back form the iCloud server.

Don't have a clue how or why it happened. But my notes were safe
