New iPhone 4s is disabled - has not been synced. iTunes will not sync since it is disabled.

I just got my iPhone 4s today. My husband set a passcode on it and promptly forgot it. Now I can't use it at all. I have tried syncing it with iTunes but it comes up with the error: "iTunes could not connect to the iPhone "iPhone" because it is locked with a passcode. you must enter your passcode on the iPhone before it can be used with iTunes." All of the instructions I have read so far say I need to sync it with iTunes before anything else.... so ...??????
