Can't deselect "Ignore Ownership" to make bootable duplicate

Hi

I have a Mac Mini running 10.4.4. with a firewire connected, single partition 160GB hard drive that I want to use as the destination for Retrospect 3.03.126. Perhaps/perhaps not related, I am also running SharePoint 3.5.3.

Besides simply backing up, I want to make a complete (bootable) duplicate of the mini hard drive (system and all) on the 160GB drive, which Retrospect can normally do. I could also have the 160GB loaded with disk utilities and use it to solve Mini HD problems without the painful reformatting of the disk, reload OS etc.- just like the old "emergency disk" of yesteryear.

When I try to use Retrospect's duplicate function and set up the mini's HD as the source, and the 160GB as the destination, I get the Retrospect message:
"Warning: The volume "160GB" and others have the "Ignore ownership on this volume" setting enabled. To disable the setting select the volume, select edit/get info & expand Ownership & Permissionsun, then check the Ignore ownership checkbox.

But the trouble is, there is no such check box!. I thought that perhaps Sharepoint, being a permissions adjusting tool, might have somehow removed that option, and replaced it with some Sharepoint Preferences setting, but I don't see any reference to it in either the documentation or by cruising through all the pref settings. I used the Share points Forum, and the developer, MHorn, graciously explained that Sharepoints doesn't have anything to do with the "Ignore Ownership" checkbox, and that it is an OS issue.

I tried logging in as "root", but still no checkbox

I'm sure there is some dumb/easy answer to this problem, but none of the Get Info windows for any of the drives including the Mini's internal drive, the Firewire connected 160GB drive, or any of the other drives on the networked computers, show the "ignore Ownership" checkbox. -- Aliens have installed a "special for me only" get info window .

I applied Apple's latest OS10.4.4 update this morning, and aside from the usual three or four things that no longer work properly, nothing happened to improve the"Get Info Checkbox" debacle.

Also, the 160GB drive is currently formatted as (fat)32, as I had originaly wanted to be able to access it easily form the PC on the network, and I understand that I will have to reformat the 160GB if I want it to be bootable. Could that affect the presence or not of the "Ignore Ownership" check box?

Does anyone have any suggestions re. how to disable "ignore permissions on this volume"?? kgreen@islandnet.com

Hi, kent.

That version is incompatible with Tiger. You want to use the latest version, Retrospect 6.1.126 along with the latest Retrospect Driver Update, 6.1.3.101.

You'll probably have to purchase an upgrade from Retrospect 3.x to Retrospect 6.1. I'm pretty sure there's no free update from 3.x to 6.x, as — if memory serves — there was an upgrade fee to go from 5.x to 6.x.

I suspect the fact that the disk is formatted as FAT32 could be the problem. I've not tested it, but it seems reasonable.

I trust you've opened the Get Info window, then clicked the disclosure triangle next to "Ownership & Permissions" per the instructions?

The drive will have to be formatted as Mac OS Extended (aka HFS+ or HFS Plus) for a bootable Duplicate. So, I'd suggest reformatting the drive in Mac OS Extended format with Disk Utility > Erase.

Note that you may also want to partition the FireWire drive so you can use if for more than just the Mini's duplicate. For some ideas on partitioning schemes when using a FireWire drive for backup, see my "Backup and Recovery" FAQ. Note that if there's data you want to save already on the FireWire drive, you need to back that up before partitioning or re-partitioning a drive.

Good luck!
