When I create an event on my iphone is there a way to invite other attendees to the appointment. Obviouvsly I can do this from ical on my macbook; however, I would like to be able to invite people using my iphone or ipad. If this is not an option---wow--talk about an oversite by Apple.

Yes, there is a way. When you create an event, there is a section for invitees. You can see it on the screenshot.
