My iPhone 4 doesn't have Software Update, either. Under General it only has About and Usage in the first block. Any idea what's up with that? I'm experiencing the quickly draining battery problem and want to do the update. Unfortunately, I can't do it on my computer because it's old and doesn't have enough memory. Did I get a defective iPhone?

I have IOS 5.1.1, however I bought my partner a second hand iPhone 3GS today, I connected it to iTunes and it told me there was an update available. I completed the update and now it tells me its 4.2.1 and I have pressed the "check for update" button numerous times and it says that update 4.2.1 is the latest verion, yet I know its not and its really annoying me, any help to sort it out would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

It's not an update to iTunes. It's an update to the phone. Just open iTunes and connect your phone. It shoud automatically detect the phone, check for updates, and prompt you there is one available and ask if you want to download and install it. (dont do it yet but..) If yes then dont disconnect your phone until it is absolutely complete.

Dont want to lose information? Back up and transfer purchases. iOS 4 upgrade to 5 and above has a history of data loss. Once the update is done then restore from back up that you created prior to updating.
