I am missing somehing about iClouds. I gather that whatever I now purchase is now loaded on to iClouds. Does that mean it doesn't exist physically on the device upon I made the purchase and when I play it, it is downloaded from iCloud? Or are there copies in both places? Or just on my purchasing device and iClouds just has a pointer to it on the purchasing device?

What I am looking for is a way to move my 12GBytes of songs off my iPhone onto iCloud. Is there a way to do this?

When you purchased songs from iTunes the songs will be downloaded onto your device (your computer is also a device), iCloud will create a list (your purchased songs) of  links to their huge database of songs. So if you have another device and you also want that song you can download from iCloud for free. (You don't need to plug into your computer for it). The songs you have in iTunes/iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch are digital copies.

thanks for the concise clear answer. i am anxiously awaiting Music Match. After Music Match run, it sounds as if I could delete a song from a device and get it back vis iCloud when I wanted to listen to it.

You can already redownload iTunes purchased music if it is not on a device.

iTunes Match will allow you to do redownload anything you have added to iTunes Match, including songs not purcahsed from iTunes store.
