Problem getting my Canon LBP5050 to work with Lion.

I am trying to get my Canon LPP5050 to print using recently upgraded Lion OSX 10.7.2. Instaled and re-instaled canon driver v3.4 even whilst having my hand held by canon help, to no avail. Still getting the same error :/Library/Printers/Canon/CUPSCAPT/Bins/capdftopdl failed. Can anybody help?

I think this error occurs when a previous intall of the driver is not completely overwritten by the new version. So removal of the CAPT files and then a resinstallation is often enough to get this resolved.

The v3.40 installer includes an Uninstall function. Did the Canon tech get you to run this? If not, run the v3.40 installer again and at the point where it shows Easy Install, change this drop menu to Uninstall and OK the procedures to completion. Once the driver is removed, disconnect the printer USB, restart the Mac and then run the v3.40 installer again. Once this has finished, reconnect the USB cable and add the printer in Print & Scan.

In addition I then when back to the Canon website only to find that they have now removed the driver from their list for this printer they have also posted a sort of news flash type thing saying there are a limited number of printers that are compatible with Lion, mine not being on of them. Looks like I'm stuffed. I've also had a few more attempts at a reinstall making sure all canon files are deleted, some were a little tricky to get rid off including on called CAPTBackgrounder. I'm pretty sure I got ride of the lot and emptied the trash but it still didn't work. I'm running out of ideas.

Whoever you spoke to at Apple Care is an idiot. The printer list shows what printer drivers are availalbe via Software Update, and that's all. There are plenty of printers that are not on this list that have drivers for Lion, including the LBP5050

Also, checking the Canon Australia web site, the LBP5050 is still listed with the v3.40 driver for Lion. And I have an LBP5050 at work that is printing fine from Lion, so I am not sure what web site you are referring to?

Can you open System Information and under Hardware, select Printers. Then in the top right pane, select the printer and copy back here what is showing in the bottom right pane.

Also, open Activity Monitor and check that CAPT Backgrounder is showing.

Hi PAHU the website I was using was Canon UK. I've now started with a clean slate so to speak. No printers in system information no Canon software on my harddrive under printers and an empty trash no CAPT Backgrounder in Activity Monitor. Then downloaded the driver from Canon Australia and installed in the normal way. Same error.

I think these are the images you wanted:

I notice the paper size is set at US letter rather than A4 and I dont seem to be able to change it. Don't know if this just a red herring.

Hi dude sorry the screen captures didn't work I then got frustrated and went for a walk. I got the printer working on an old Mac and I'm giving up trying to get it to work with Lion I feel I can't waste any more time on the darn thing. I also found that the entire Canon (UK) download site was down so I think they know their having proper issues with the whole thing. Thanks for trying to help mate.

Hey Mike,

I know how you feel... I've been unable to get either of my Canon 5050n printers working on my MacBook Pro since installing Lion on the day of release. I don't normally jump in like that, but had just upgraded my MacBook so knew I could still print from the old machine. And just as well, because I had to all this time.

The Canon UK/Europe website is useless. They are always 6 months after the Aussie website, always go straight there.

Anyway, 3.36 didn't work for me, but 3.40 did - at the third attempt. Keep trying, it will work. Your method may have to be different. One thing for sure, after installing it didn't work until restarting, at which point it then worked. The other thing I had to do prior was to choose to Reset Printing System, wiping all the printers that were set up. Then installed. Then restarted, and it worked.

Good luck, just wanted to re-assure you that 3.40 will work.

Thanks Dude Yeh tried that I think I've, jumped through every hoop I could think of. Its really nice to hear from all these people from every corner of the world trying to lend a hand. The community is brilliant and the best thing is I've never had to use it before and I've been using Macs for more years than I care to remember. As it happens my brother is having my Canon printer (he uses dirty PC's) so I'll just have to go out and get one that is TOTALLY Lion compatible. Any recommendations?

I've just been having another go at getting the bloody thing to work. Tried all the stuff PAHU suggested not from this discussion but all the other ones I could find even thought it may have been the browser I was using to download the drivers (cluching at straws I know) but to no avail. What does this unix file do

My UNIX is 20 years rusty, why is this the source of the error I keep getting.

I'm like a dog with a bone I just won't let it lie.
