iPad battery has started draining more quickly, even when not in use.

iPad battery drains within a day without being used. All pushes, notifications, location devises are off. I am losing 7 - 10% an hour while not in use. This just started a couple of days ago. My iPad is 5 months old. Even using the Kindle app, the battery drains faster than it did two weeks ago. I've lost 6% of my charge just filling out this form!!!

There does seem to be a glitch with iOS5 and the battery. Apple is working on it but no idea how long it'll take.

Have you tried to reset the ipad? Hold the sleep ad home key past when you see the power down slider and until you see the silver apple. This resets the device. You can also try running it totally down then charging it up from 'dead'.

It does drain faster with iOS5, just not usually that much faster.

iOS 5.01 was an attempt by Apple to fix it, but it's had mixed results.

Theories have ranged from wifi syncing or iCloud syncing going on in the background, draining the battery. To bluetooth being on as a default, to push notifications and others.

There has been no hard and fast fix. 5.01 fixed it for some, made it worse for others and there are still others that never had the battery drain issue in the first place.

Using the battery level meter for this purpose is tantamount to using your car's gas gauge to calculate miles per gallon. Charge the iPad overnight using the wall-mount charger that came with it. Then, use it to your heart's content, paying attention to how long it operates prior to auto-shutdown. Ignore any low battery alerts that may appear. How much total operating time did you get?

I turned off everything that I could find... notifications, mail retrieval, etc. Then turned the iPad all the way off, waited, and then turned it back on. What ever it was reset itself and I am back to normal. The only thing that I could think is that I had a lot of apps that used "my location" and mail was checking for updates like every 15 minutes (even though I never set it that way), and I kept those things off. I am not having trouble any more.

Hope that helps you!

My iPad (first gen) is suddenly in this same battery-draining zone. Have done hard reset, etc. but just getting really crappy battery life with no clear reason. Went from 80% when I shut it down last night to 40% this morning, with no apps running and most of the typically battery draining background functions shut off. I used to get 10-12 hours of use easily on a full charge. Now it's just a few hours.

Between this issue with iPad battery and my recently purchased MBP 15", preloaded with Lion (which I really do not like and am only keeping on the MBP so I can sync with iPhone and iPad), I am really not feeling a lot of love for Apple as a company lately. I've been a longtime supporter of the company and have many of their products in use, but not a very happy customer these days.

I have been experiencing the same thing. When it is not in use battery drains about 5% per hour and when it is in use it drains 10% every 30 minutes. That means my battery life has been halved since iOS 5.1. Which is incredibly infuriating! How can I be promised 10 hours as advertised and all of a sudden be left with 5 hours per charge. I hope a new update will correct this problem... I was fine and dandy before the update...

The quickest way (and really the only way) to charge your iPad is with the included 10W USB Power Adapter. iPad will also charge, although more slowly, when attached to a computer with a high-power USB port (many recent Mac computers) or with an iPhone Power Adapter (5W). When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge very slowly (but iPad indicates not charging). Make sure your computer is on while charging iPad via USB. If iPad is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPad battery will continue to drain.

Apple recommends that once a month you let the iPad fully discharge & then recharge to 100%.

How to Calibrate Your Mac, iPhone, or iPad Battery

At this link http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/galaxy-tab-android-tablet,3014-11.html , tests show that the iPad 2 battery (25 watt-hours) will charge to 90% in 3 hours 1 minute. It will charge to 100% in 4 hours 2 minutes. The new iPad has a larger capacity battery (42 watt-hours), so using the 10W charger will obviously take longer. If you are using your iPad while charging, it will take even longer. It's best to turn your new iPad OFF and charge over night. In rare instances when using the Camera Connection Kit, you may notice that iPad does not charge after using the Camera Connection Kit. Disconnecting and reconnecting the iPad from the charger will resolve this issue.
