Email via POP on iPhone 4S?

I am trying to set my iPhone 4S to download my email (from gmail) via POP rather than IMAP, but can't seem to do it. Google's instructions say there should be a tab to tap to switch from IMAP to POP, but I can't find it. Has the POP option been disabled in IOS5 or IPhone 4S, please?

Weeellll..... I download from my gmail account on to 3 other devices (laptops and notebook) and use POP because I want to keep different messages (relating to different aspects of my life) on each machine. I find POP enables me to do this and then choose to delete messages from the hard drive of one machine without also deleting them from gmail, so I can subsequently download them to one of my other machines.

I understand that, using IMAP, deleting from one machine would delete the message from gmail, which I don't want.

My method may be cumbersome, but POP works for me, so I don't want to venture into IMAP on my iPhone!!

I dont know if I'd want to use Gmail because of added security risks, but if that is not a concern, then try setting up the account by NOT using the AUTO GMAIL setup function on your iPhone. Instead choose the last New Account Option at the bottom of the list "Other"...and add the email account manually. When you do it this way you will have the option of IMAP or POP.

I fully understand what you are trying to do and POP is the best way to do this as you have discovered. I assume you are using Outlook on the other PCs, and I am sure you are aware of all the other features and options in the Advanced settings to help you manage all this. A bit of a Rubic's Cube, but when its all set up it works great.

Thanks very much, Rick, but I have tried setting up POP using "other" as you suggest, but nowhere in the process does it give me the chance to switch from IMAP to POP. It still just automatically sets everything up as POP, without letting me input any settings. Very frustrating - unless I'm doing something really stupid (not beyond the bounds of possibility!).

Unless iPhone 4s is different with the OS5, then you might just be missing it. It shows up as a "Tab" on top of the email setup page on the second page of the setup.

I just tried it, and went to "Other"......"Add Mail Account".......then filled out the Name, Address, Password, Description....then pressed "NEXT" and then on the next page it has a TAB to chose either IMAP or POP.

See attached pic of my screen.User uploaded file

Are you not getting this? iPhone 4s is OS5 correct? Hard to believe that this menu item would be different for an iPhone 4s....but heck, after all the OS5 update issues, nothing would surprise me now.

I am assuming you have already set your GMAIL account to allow for POP in the settings at GMAIL?

If so....then what are you saying is not being recognized.....the INCOMMING or OUTGOING server???

your settings should be:

Enter your name, email address, and password in the appropriate fields. T

The Address field should be your full email address (username@gmail.com)

For the Incoming Mail Server, fill in the Host Name field as 'pop.gmail.com.

For Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP), fill in the Host Name field as 'smtp.gmail.com.'

If you are having problem with the outgoing, then try using your carriers OUTGOING mail server, and you would have to get it from them. If it is AT&T then it would be CWMX.COM but they are having their own problems since the OS5 upgrade, so you would actually use the IP address of that server.

Hope this helps

Just for the record everyone. After the update to 5.0.1 If you have enabled iCloud on setup after you did a restore and erase-- if you had update problems as I did with my wife's iPhone-- the setup for mail is different. When you try to resetup your old email account in the mail app under the "other" tab it defaults to IMAP only --you do NOT get a choice to choose IMAP or POP (as above with Rick) after the first setup screen. Why? Lord only knows. Well, I called apple tech support and they were of no help at all and essentially shrugged their collective shoulders.

You will all be happy to know that I have solved this problem on my own and I think it bears repeating to all of you, as I am sure others have come upon this problem as well. The solution appears to be to turn off iCloud and delete the iCloud account (keep the data on your phone of course) in settings and then turn off push notifications. Then restart your phone. You may have to restart twice. Then try setting up your mail account under "other". Then when you have filled out the first setup acct screen and go to the next screen. Volia! You should then see the option on the next setup screen to choose IMAP or POP. You can then input the settings as per your POP account as specified by your carrier. One note however, the verify process may take up to a minute or more--very slow for some reason when setting up as a POP acct. Anyway, I thought this was weird because under 5.0-- I would get the option after first email setup screen to choose HTTP, IMAP or POP??

My theory is that somehow IMAP gets defaulted as the only choice because iCloud operates that way if enabled etc. You can then turn iCloud back on as well as resetup acct-- as well as push notifications and your POP email acct should still continue to work as configured. I think this is a definite glitch or bug with the update to 5.0.1? I knew that POP was still supported since my iPhone did not need to be reset or erased after the update to 5.0.1 and my POP acct was still there working as configured but if I tried to add another POP acct under "Other" it would also only default straight to IMAP after setup screen. Very weird Bug to say the least.

I hope that helps some of you out there. I have reported this bug to Apple officially. My setup is an iPhone 4S as is my wife's with ios 5.0.1
