Latest Java update broke Juniper Network Connect VPN client

Updated OS X Lion (10.7.2) with the Java update from Apple via Apple's network update tool last night. It broke the Juniper Network Connect VPN client application. Someone is also reporting that the Java update on 10.6.8 also broke this. I've confirmed on two different Lion macbook pros. Behavior is:

Network Connect starts up and is able to contact the remote server. It accepts my login credentials and passes the host check that our servers do, but instead of then providing our usual prompts/links window to select VPN, etc., the Network Connect window gets put behind other windows and returns to the prompts for login credentials.

I can also confirm that launching from the web portal rather than the local installed Network Connect client works, So, I have a workaround, but the Network Connect functionality is currently broken by the Java update.

The Network Connect log file is indicating a bus error core (signal 10):

I posted to the Juniper discussion forums for this product:

http://forums.juniper.net/t5/SSL-VPN/bd-p/SSL_VPN

but I can't log a ticket with them because I don't have that kind of access there. I'm hoping someone else over there who does has permission and is reading that forum will log a ticket with Juniper. It is being discussed there.

I would say that it's still not clear whether this is a bug in the Apple Java update or the Juniper Network Connect VPN client application.

Unfortunately, Juniper's response is "Go away you little non-enterprise people. You bother me." We are supposed to report this to our IT administrators, who are likely to just say it is a Mac bug. It looks like we are stuck for the time being. Luckily, nothing else in the world depends on Java. I won't update my 10.6.8 machine until I hear that Juniper has fixed the bug.

Wrong reply-to ... sorry etresoft

Others un-installed the Java update in Snow Leopard by applying the "10.6.8 Combo Updater" to restore "core system components".

This appears to be the "client update" for 10.7.2: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1459

It could restore the old Java version in the system, but ohers in this discussion or this fiorum may want to ring as to this "combo update" being a good idea.

Perhaps a new thread in the "Lion"-specific forum asking if this seems a good course of action.

That is all I can offer.

I'm experiencing exactly the same problem with Network Connect on a 10.7.2 machine. Unfortunately, the web portal workaround doesn't work for me either. It may work for some (i.e., for openthreads) but not all because of differences in security settings on the VPN server.

Has anyone found a reliable solution for this? Is it possible to uninstall the java update?

This is the error that's showing up in the Console for me:

Hopefully someone can find a solution.

I am having the same problem with a Cisco AnyConnect client. Our IT won't allow us to load the client on the MAC, so we have to use a web portal via an older Firefox version (nothing newer works). When I try to get connected, the system asks for my credentials and accepts them, but never connects. I see a message in the bottom left corner of the browser window stating "Applet idJavaSun notloaded". This problem showed up immediately after I installed the latest java update. This is definitely a MAC/Java issue. I don't think it's Juniper or Cisco's problem.

See Juniper's KB at http://kb.juniper.net/InfoCenter/index?page=content&id=KB22221 with the following comment: "The Juniper engineering team has determined that this is a bug in Java 1.6.0_29 and the same has been reported to Apple. The Apple bug reference number is 10519204. You can contact Apple, by referring the bug number, for the latest status update.". Workarounds available as well.
