Lets just say, Wyodor, that we give you the week off from being the forum police. Let's suppose, also, that Ian up there really is a newbie to Mac, to iWeb and to the forums. Where would he read that proper forum etiquette is to do a thorough search to see if his question has been answere before? Of what use do you think your smug answer will be to him?

Give it a rest. Please. (flame shield activated)

To Ian I say:

iWeb is very much alive. MobileMe as a web host is in it's death throes, but iWeb will stilll be viable for a good bit to come. Not the greatest for a blog, but still the best wysyiwyg (what you see is what you get for you newbies) web site builder that is still very useful and totally intuitive in design. You can then host your site at one of many many hosting companies. I use GoDaddy.com.

For a blog you might try Tumblr or Wordpress which willl take care of the site design and the hosting as well. Good luck.

Thanks Scotious,

I genuinely do have a new Mac BookPro which i bought in Glasgow about 2 months ago after having been a PC user for years!....ive wanted to create a very simple website to blog on, stick some pics up on and link my twitter account. As im completely new to the whole 'build a website' thing i was hoping to get some great advice which you have given, so thanks for that.

Whilst Wyodor's first response was a bit agressive, he did have a point. I have subsequently had a wee look over the forums, but didnt find a specific answer to my question.

Many thanks for your advice Scotious...

Regards

Ian

You're welcome, Ian. I do apologize for hijacking your thread to rant, but it was building up for a long time. Your straw broke the camel's back.

I'm really not sure about this, as I, too, am fairly new at web design, but i think the iWeb blogs only worked natively with MobileMe for comments. There are many workarounds, however. I fooled around with one here (hosted at GoDaddy - but never implemented,) from Flexi Comment. You, too, can grab the link to the comment from the blog. If you visit, leave a comment!

I would use weebly.com. Their interface is really intuitive and you basically get free hosting. My advice is to get a custom domain option (I use domains at retail for that). Then you have something easy to remember to give people you know and a simple itnerface. It allows blogging, pictures and you just need to add a link to your twitter.

You could also use Tumblr.com. They have custom domain option as well, and a multitude of other options.

Although Apple has discontinued support of iWeb (and iDVD) it is still alive and kicking for a while (until the Mac operation system evolves to the point where iWeb isn't supported. That could be a couple of years.

There is nothing out there that is as easy and intutiive as iWeb. If you're just starting out you might download and try the demo versions of some of the more commonly recommended alternatives. There will be a learning curve involved with them.

I've decided on Flux as my alternative. It's certainly not as intutive as iWeb but by following closely their 5 video tutorials I've begun to get the hang of it and am learning HTML/CSS in the process. It's similar to drop and drag in how you add elements to the page and configure them.

A lot depens on how much you're willing to put into learning whatever design application you select. None will be anywhere as easy as iWeb is. 😟

I use iWeb hosted through 123.com It is presented exactly as intended on my iWeb screen. The blog also works correctly. Although there are rarely any comments, the option is set to on, and occasionally there is a comment, which means that I know that those work too. So if anyone is experiencing uncertainty about where to transfer their site from MobileMe, this will be an option that should work. I wonder whether a third party may take up the mantle in time and produce an iWeb look-alike. After working with such an easy application you wouldn't really expect we would have to return to to a more difficult life! Long live iWeb.

Are you saying that you have an iWeb blog hosted on a 3rd party ftp server which allows visitors to add comments? That would be a first since the following has always been part of iWeb's Help file:

Features Unavailable When Publishing to a 3rd Party Server:

◼ Password protection

◼ Blog and photo comments

◼ Blog search

◼ Hit counter

The following is a screenshot of iWeb Help on publishing to an ftp server:

User uploaded file

Currently if the site is published directly from iWeb to the 3rd party server the RSS feed and slideshow subscription features will work. However, if the site is first published to a folder on the hard drive and then uploaded to the sever with a 3rd party FTP client those two feature will be broken.

Old Toad - you can of course use 3rd-party commenting, forms, etc. on iWeb sites hosted on 3rd-party hosts.

E.g.: My spouse runs a small business teaching courses. We build and maintain her site completely on iWeb, and publish it directly through iWeb FTP to 1and1.com.

I keep a couple of pages mostly "blank" and use HTML code from 1and1 for form submission, PayPal, commenting, etc.

Works great!

You are not using the "Apple" or .Mac versions of commenting or forms or the like, but it is seamless to the end user (and very easy to implement!).

you can keep iweb running way beyond its expiration date by build multi-boot system as long as the hardware (your current computer) supports legacy OS and iWeb.

multi-boot system consists of internal disk with multiple partition or external disk drives for different OS/apps versions, so i don't see why iweb would cease to work becaues of progress.

as of now, you can build multi-boot systems on any modern computers, ie: windows, linux and apple os.

What on earth do you mena that you can't find iWeb anywhere to buy? Where have you actually looked?

You can't purcahse iWeb on its own - it is part of either the iLife 11 or iLife 09 boxed set. The iLife 11 boxed set is still available from the Apple store online and you should be able to purcahse it from Amazon too. Other than that, iWeb 09 is also included in the iLife 09 boxed set which you should also be able to purcahse from Amazon and probably at a reduced price.

iWeb is not avilable to purchase on its own - if you want it you'll have to get the iLife boxed set.

Hello. Yes, that is exactly what I am saying, OT. I used 123.com so that I could use the URL stalbansowneastend.co.uk instead of the MobileMe-style URL. The blog works, and very occasionally there is a comment (in fact it's quite rare!). The RSS feeds also work. But then, I have never published the site to a folder, so, as you say, that would probably be the reason. All I know is, it just works, and I'm grateful for that. An interesting thread.
