Q: iOS 5.0.1 problems - Searching for Network and battery life still isnt great.

So I dont know if anyone else is having this problem but I upgrade to iOS 5.1 today and it seems to me that my network is being dropped A LOT today.  I know it probably doesnt help that I'm on T-Mobile with a factory unlocked iPhone 4 but it seems that before I upgraded, I was able to keep my network for a longer amount of time.  Also, I think iOS 5.1 actually made the battery life worse.  Im down to 40% and thats without any calls, a few texts and very little wifi surfing.

Reply if your having the same problem lol

Hi All, I've been on your position for about a week..

My iPhone 4s is losing signal after the ios 5.0.1 update.. I Can't make a phone call or even text a message.. It's a useless phone..

Then, I've been informed that the reason behind these signal issues is because the ios 5.0.1 update stop supporting the old SIM Card model..

We need to use the new model of sim card, the USIM or 3G SIM..

So I went to my provider, Asking them spesifically for a USIM or 3G SIM, then I insttalled it to my phone.. at first, my phone still struggling to search for network (maybe it's the transition, I don't know for sure).. but after a few minutes, it showed a full bar of signal.. and I've never had these signal problems ever since..

Apple's Mistake here is not informed the user about the transition to the newer USIM / 3G SIM model.. and left so many frustated-uninformed user..

But now you've known.. So, there you go guys, go to your provider and asked them for a USIM or 3G SIM card..

    Hello guys,

I've sent an email to Apple and have receive a call from an internal executive about this issue. I've received a message with some technical questions about this issue.

Maybe we'll have something new in the next days. I'll post here in case I get useful info about that.

    Cheers,

    Hi,

actually I have different experience. I had exactly the same issues as everyone else posting in this forum and after few days of "tilting at windmills" I sent the phone back to retailer (T-Mobile) for repair (not knowing what the issue really was). I got it back yesterday with warranty report saying "replaced mother board" and everything works fine even after upgrading it to 5.0.1 again; battery lost just 20% in 24 hours of normal usage, signal is stable... all is well with the same SIM (I kept it so it has not been replaced).

Of course I might be wrong but to my mind, all these issues are caused by HW not by SW (maybe a combination of both).

I encourage everyone to send the phone back to your retailer for warranty repair.

    hope it helps

T Mobile, so your phone is the unlocked version that was purchased. You may want to call your carrier if your phone is dropping calls.

    Mikey,

This is really interesting, I'm also running on iOS 5.0.1 on my iPhone 4S 64GB and my modem FW is a newer one, maybe it came with 5.0.1 and is the problem!!!

    My information are:

    Version: 5.0.1 (9A405)

    Carrier: TIM 11.0 (Brazil)

    Modem FW: 1.0.13

I went to my provider, asked for a new SIM and it is working so far but I could notice some signal loss (3 or 4 times).

    BR,

    IgorOzz,

I've been googling about it and modem fw update should come with os5.0.1 update so you're right, it is a bit weird. However I don't believe modem fw has anyting to do with these issues.

Anyway, i will try to do update or restore or whatever itunes allows me to do at this point and will get back to you with results... I'm curious myself :)

    Hi again Mikey...

If you can upgrade your modem to 1.0.13, let me know if your signal loss problems come back. In fact, the phone modem is what connects you to the carrier that's why I strongly believe this 1.0.13 is the bad guy here.

I'm still in contact with someone inside Apple and had reported this to him. As soon as I have some news I'll post here.

    Cheers,

    Hi IgorOzz,

so I did the update one hour ago, now I have modem FW version 1.0.13 and so far so good. no signal loss, I can make/receive calls, sms/mms, imessage etc.. all is well. I will let you know if it changes but I really think it was a HW failure what was causing my problems.

It would also explain why not everyone has experienced signal loss issues.

    sorry for posting "bad" news

    Hey Mikey,

At least that's nice to see your phone is working fine. Mine too after replacing the SIM. But i've heard users replacing SIMs after some days working. So that's why I'm thinking we both we'll get the problems back. I hope I'm wrong. Well, if you notice something new let us know

    Good day,

i had this problem as soon as I upgraded to 5.0.1.

I have upgraded to the latest 5.1 beta that was just released, and I can make phone calls now! same SIM card, same iphone 4s. The only thing that has changed is the software. It appears to use a later version of the baseband. I also don't appear to get the modem reset in the diagnostics every 5 minutes which was the root of the no service, losing signal just after a reboot.

I haven't had time to test everything so be warned.

I can't post links but do a search I'm sure you will find the ipsw

Oh and you will need to be a developer or at the very least your device UDID registered
