Mar 12, 2012 1:05 PM in response to pestavby nbercasio,Of course, I have to complain. Previous updates, I haven't done anything except install the updates and the phone/battery was functioning as it is. With this 5.1 update, battery is draining quite fast.

Mar 12, 2012 5:08 PM in response to mtbeaulieuby pkos99,Do you have 3G on?
That drains battery life.
Some other factors of this are
Brightness
Background apps like Pandora or LastFM
Location Services
and more....
To adjust 3G, go to Settings>General>Network>Enable 3G
|__Slide this slider off.
That way, you get more battery life!

Mar 12, 2012 5:25 PM in response to pkos99by nbercasio,I had 3G on before this update, battery was fine. After the update, battery is draining quite fast. Having said that, what is the point of getting a 3G phone then just turn it off?

Mar 12, 2012 6:41 PM in response to pkos99by Forgotten Rebel,Pure genius. Why don't we all just turn our darn iphones off? I'm sure that will get the battery to last longer.
Apple screwed us all on this fiasco rendering alot of iPhones near useless so REMEMBER this when you purchase your next smart phone.

Mar 13, 2012 3:11 AM in response to mtbeaulieuby RottenEggs, just turn iCloud off (you can keep photos copying over even), and battery life will become better than before.
NO RESTORE necesssary.
I've had my iPhone 4 on standby for 5 hours, 1% usage
Now on second day with no charge, and still at 63%
Pheeew, happy again!
iCloud is BUGGED

Mar 13, 2012 5:46 AM in response to DevilMarkby Astronorick,Your battery life looks great. I would speculate you are in an area where yourphone is not constantly looking for 3g or WiFi ? Last night at home, I had my WiFi turned OFF, and woke up to a poor battery (10%). When I leave WiFi ON, it does WAAAY better. At my home, 3G is also very poor - so turning WiFi off forced it to grab email through a marginally available 3G - I'm confident this is my battery killer, but will prove it to myself tonight for round 2 of some testing. I usually have my email on Push, but I thought I'd set to Fetch to see how it helps.
My conclusions are pointing towards turning ON wifi if able to use, turn it OFF if not available, so that phone is't searching. If in a bad 3G area, I think it works too hard trying to connect 3G. Is there an APP out there that can accurately and safely report detailed usage ? Like time spent attempting to find 3G, WiFi, etc. ? I really think this is the issue.
So here's my plan for tonights trial, at my home where I have WiFi, but poor 3G.
- WiFi on (and connected WiFi through home WiFi)
- 3G on
- Exchange mail set to FETCH instead of Push (does anyone find this makes much difference on battery ?)
- Bluetooth OFF
Since the 4S is really pushing us all into managing our phone's like I had to with my Androids, I really wish they would open up control so we could have a selection of one touch buttons that are preset like "Bluetooth off, WiFi on, 3G off", or "3G on, WiFi off, BlueTooth Off".

Mar 13, 2012 8:16 AM in response to mtbeaulieuby lampshadecollar,Had good battery life before the update, now terrible. Noticed the isssue within hours after the update. Only had to charge once a day before, now can't even make it through the morning.
For example: I killed all background apps the night before, took the phone off the charger in the morning, sent an email, read two more while checking my calendar and in 45 minutes I had lost 50% of battery. Double checked to see what background apps were up and it was just mail and calendar.
This is so incredibly worse than it was before. Really sours my opinion.

Mar 13, 2012 10:09 AM in response to lampshadecollarby Applefoxfan,It's been about 4-5 days after the 5.1 udpate and while the first two days were horrible, battery seems to be working ok now - at least on par with before.
To be honest, it was a huge put off all these tips on reset this, turn off that, blah blah blah. Phone's are meant to be used as I want them, not limit myself since some update comes out. Only thing I did was a hard restart, home and power button at same time.
That being said, I didn't do any restore, any turn offs etc. Only thing I did was run it down to zero 2x and then fully charge to 100%. Checked iCloud settings and made sure there wasn't unnecessarily on (again no changes from 5.0) and that's it.
Hope issues resolve for all of you.

Mar 13, 2012 10:47 AM in response to mtbeaulieuby Zippern,Battery problem in 5.1 fixed for me too!
As for many other 4S users, this was the solution:
- Did a reset from itunes.
- restored from backup (not 'new phone' setup)
Now: 96% after 2h standby 25m use
Before: guess 70-75%
This was my first full reinstall for a long time, used OTA from the beginning.
Ps. Before release 5.1 my battery worked fine.

Mar 13, 2012 11:08 AM in response to Zippernby Astronorick,I had done resets, etc., but in my case I think I'm really getting to the core of my issue. Here's whats going on for me:
- WiFi is OFF
- PUSH email (exchange) is ON
- Bluetooth is OFF
- 3G is on
(OUTSIDE my office): Standy 1 Hour 45 Minutes / 20 minutes Use - Battery at 99%
(In my office, where 3G is very spotty): Standby 2 Hours 36 minutes / 1 Hour Use - Battery down to 91%
I am pretty much convinced at this point that it's the bad 3G tha is causing me all the trouble. I think phone is working it's butt off looking for network, and since I have push enables, it's keeping it busy. I'm going to verify this by turning off 3G for an hour, which will basically render my phone into being a feature phone :-)
Anyone know of an APP that can help me monitor what is in USE, in particular what what power I'm using hunting for 3 ?
