Q: iOS 5.0.1 - Made my iPhone 4S battery performance worse!

I upgraded my iphone 4S to the 5.0.1 release today. However, I've noticed that my battery life has actually gotten worse since I upgrade. For example, I've been home for approximately 30 minutes and my battery has gone down in 8%. In the 30 minutes, I had a 30 second phone call and sent 3 text messages. I am connected to our wi-fi (which is a strong connection) and I have re-started my phone.

Please let me know if anyone else is having any issues!?!!?

Apple - Can you please fix the iphone 4s battery issues? I might as well go get a 4g android phone if the battery life remains this poor.

iPhone 4S, iOS 5, Verizon

    Same here, Mar mostro

    1) charge the battery completely and

    2) NOT touch the settings

seems to give me abundant battery life.

This might be a temporary solution until Apple releases a fix for this annoying problem.

    THX to all involved

I also noticed that since I upgraded to iOS 5.1 battery usage on my iPhone 4 has about doubled.  So I read all the messages in this thread and tried a few things.  "Hard reboot" didn't help, "Reset all settings" and then visiting all my settings again didn't help.  Finally did a "Restore" via iTunes, and restored settings and all from an older backup (before iOS 5.1 update), and that was it.  Just a trip through settings, and a few updates to do to bring things up to date.  My contacts, calendar, notes, reminders, and so on were as they should be.  My backup on iCloud was good, too, so if those had been regressed, I could have updated them from iCloud.

I'm not sure why this worked, but I thought that I'd share it.  I suspect that it has to do with some stray settings from the "over-the-air" update I did to iOS 5.1.  The iTunes Restore took some time since the iOS 5.1 update was downloaded and re-applied, but I have a better feeling that things will be good until the next update *smile*.  Then that'll be a new ballgame, we'll see.  I may do the next iOS update via iTunes instead of "over-the-air" and see if that has a better result.  Or Apple may fix it if this is an "over-the-air" update problem.

I agree that we shouldn't have to worry about this stuff, but spending a little while on it did help restore my peace of mind, and this phone is hard to beat if the battery usage is normal...I was pretty sure that it was a settings thing, since before the 5.1 update everything was fine on my phone.

I'd like to add something that I just noticed...I had downloaded a CPU monitor app (AAi), and yesterday before doing the "Restore", there was a lot of CPU usage spikes when I wasn't doing anything.  Today, I noticed that the CPU usage was pretty smooth, ranging between 12-14% when I wasn't doing anything.  So there was something going on that was causing those.  I had tried turning off both Location Services and iCloud to see if either one of those was the culprit, no change.  I wasn't on WiFi, so it wasn't that (unless having WiFi turned on when not using it was the problem, but it hasn't been before).  It's still a mystery to me.

If I had spent a couple of bucks, I could have gotten a better CPU monitor app, and could probably have figured out what those usage peaks that were apparently the battery usage culprit were.

I don't know what to say but my phone started behaving mysteriously again. After charging it again last night and pulling the plug at 01:30am I went to sleep only to find it in the morning at 08:00am showing me 88% battery level with usage at 1hrs 37min. Very strange indeed !!! At standby the usage as 1hr 37min ????? What could be wrong ???? Mind you no settings were changed at all. Locations / notifications all off. Wifi on and 3G on.

My wife's 3GS also behaved in a similar fashion. It was 75% at bed time and in the morning at 16%. Locations / notifications all off. Wifi on when home 3G off.

I am going to give it another day or two or else revert to my earlier post which I posted on this forum. Here is the post again.

To all you guys out there who have iOS 5.1 battery issues, here's my findings after an upgrade from 5.0.1 yesterday morning.

With all the notifications / locations services off my battery drained quicker. All I had on was the 3G and wifi on. With a little trail and error I have found that once you are home in your own wifi range, then turn off the 3G and switch wifi on. When you are out then do the opposite i.e turn off the wifi and turn on 3G. Battery life improves dramtically but with both 3G and wifi on all the time, battery drains much faster. Give it a try and post your comments.

Just a quick reply, after the Restore last night, and about 12 hours of light use today (I also got a new iPad to play with today), my battery is at about 80% now.  That seems fine to me.  Yesterday at this point it was less than 60%.

Hope that this works out for other people.

Do you have your iCloud "deleted" from your phone?

Its a mystery to me. and my 3GS also is behaving the same way. Any ideas !!!!

    O.K.

    It's probably your gmail...

Are your settings set to "Push" your mail to you or do you have them set to "Fetch" (Manual)?

If it's set to "Push" change it to Fetch and Manual so all you have to do is tap your email icon on your phone and it will "Fetch" you emails instantly.

If you already have gmail set to manual than it's probably hung in a loop.

If you have it set up through your phone and NOT the app:

Delete the account and anything associated with it.  There have been problems with the email function "Exchange" & "Gmail" getting stuck so to speak

You might try closing all the apps that are running on iphone.  tap twice on home button, press an app at the bottom until it jiggles , then tap the minus signs in the corner of all your apps taat are currently running!

Ive been on here a few times over the last week or so.

So here is a quick summary.

After the update the battery lasted maybe 3 hours.

tried restore as new phone, on the phone. didnt work.

    turned everything off.

    didnt work.

met by chance a n apple tech in a shop.

he set my phone up for a restore from my itunes account. not sure what he did sorry.

did the restore when I got home. restored phone from the last backup.

    battery now perfect.

also was contacted by apple who did some type of monitoring of the phone for 24hrs.

not sure of that result. BUT it can be fixed!

    goodluck.

Mine's fixed. Did a complete new install (again), but this time with iTunes instead of iCloud/ over the air. Started out at 9:00 am this morning, digitally abused my iPhone and have 10% left at 1:00. Everything is on. Location services, push mail, wifi, the lot. Just plug in your phone. Make sure you backed up what you want to have backed up and restore your iPhone as a new fresh iPhone. It's still a bug, but this solved it for me.

My mail is not set to '' push '' but manual. Here's what i did last night after recharge. Unplugged at 01:15am and immediately deleted the mail account ' gmail '. By 09:40am the battery was 93% with usage at 33min and standby at 8hrs 27min. This probably worked. But what do i do now with the gmail account. Setup again ????

With iOS 5.0 battery life was terriable. Apple quickly fixed it with 5.01.  Now with 5.1 battery life is back to terrible.  I could go at least two days without a charge.  After the update (and all my patterns and behaviors being the same), I don't even get a full day!  Apple needs to fix this! Or allow us to go back to iOS 5.01.
